Nibco NJ8300A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco S-585-70 ball valve work on copper tube, or does it need threaded pipe?
Solder ends only. The S-585-70 has female solder cups on both ends, so it sweats directly onto copper tube. There is no thread on this valve, so if you're tying into threaded black iron or brass nipples you need a threaded-end bronze ball valve instead, or an adapter fitting at each end. Sizes run 1/4 inch through 2 inch.
2) Is the Nibco S-585-70 full port, and does that matter for my flow?
Full port, so the ball bore matches the nominal line size and the valve doesn't throttle flow the way a standard port valve does. That matters on pump suction, low head hydronic loops, and anywhere you want to pull a brush or a probe through. Pressure drop across an open full port valve is close to that of an equal length of pipe.
3) What are the internals made of on the Nibco S-585-70, and will it hold up in a hydronic loop?
Bronze body with bronze trim, a brass ball with hard chrome plate, and a silicon bronze stem. The seats are reinforced PTFE (RPTFE), which is what gives it the 400 degree F ceiling rather than the lower limit of plain PTFE. The body material is dezincification resistant, which is the thing that kills ordinary yellow brass valves in aggressive water. The stem is blowout-proof, so line pressure cannot drive it out of the body if the packing nut is backed off.
4) Two-piece versus one-piece bronze ball valve, which should I be buying?
A two-piece body like the S-585-70 lets the manufacturer fit a full port ball, so you get full bore flow. One-piece bronze valves are almost always standard (reduced) port and are the cheaper choice where flow is not critical, like an isolation valve on a small branch. Neither one is field serviceable in the way a three-piece is; if you need to pull the valve for cleaning without cutting solder joints, specify a three-piece with union ends instead.
5) Can I use a Nibco S-585-70 on a natural gas or LP line?
Yes, gas service is one of the listed applications for this two-piece bronze valve, along with compressed air and LP gas. Check what your local gas code and the AHJ require for the specific installation before you set it.
6) What size Nibco S-585-70 do I order for 3/4 inch copper?
Order by nominal tube size, not by cup diameter. For 3/4 inch copper you want the 3/4 inch valve, MPN NJ83008. The range covers 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, so 1 inch is NJ8300A and 2 inch is NJ8310D. Every size in the run is full port with solder cups.
7) What handle comes on the Nibco S-585-70, and can I get an insulated one?
It ships with a standard carbon steel lever handle. Nibco offers the NIB-SEAL handle as an option for chilled water and other lines where you want the handle isolated from the cold surface. If you're mounting a run of these in a tight mechanical closet, remember a lever needs 90 degrees of clear swing to go full open to full closed.
