Nibco NJ9300A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco S-595-Y ball valve on potable drinking water?
No. The S-595-Y is prohibited for use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It's a bronze body valve that does not meet the current lead-free potable water requirement, so keep it on non-potable service: hydronic heating and chilled water loops, compressed air, and industrial process lines. For domestic water in a building, specify a lead-free rated Nibco ball valve instead.
2) What pipe do the solder ends on the Nibco S-595-Y fit?
The ends are female solder cups, so they sweat directly onto copper tube of the matching nominal size. Sizes run 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 and 2-1/2 inch. There are no threads on this version, so if you need to break the line apart later or you're tying into threaded steel, you want a threaded-end Nibco ball valve instead of this one.
3) Does a three-piece ball valve let me service it without cutting the pipe out?
That's the whole point of the three-piece body. The center section with the ball and seats comes out once the body bolts are loosened, while the two soldered end caps stay attached to the copper. You can replace seats or the ball in place. A two-piece or one-piece soldered valve has to be cut out and re-sweated, which is why three-piece gets specified on lines that get serviced.
4) What pressure and temperature can this Nibco bronze ball valve handle?
600 PSI (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 PSI (10.3 bar) saturated steam. Maximum temperature is 400 degrees F. Shutoff is bubble-tight at the full 600 PSI. On steam service, note the 150 PSI SWP number is the governing limit, not the 600 CWP figure.
5) Will the S-595-Y restrict flow in a pump or recirculation line?
No. It's a full port valve, meaning the ball bore matches the nominal pipe ID, so there's effectively no added pressure drop when it's open. That makes it the right choice ahead of pumps, on balance-free isolation duty, and anywhere you'd otherwise worry about head loss. A standard or conventional port valve would neck the flow down.
6) Does this Nibco valve come with a handle, and can I lock it out?
It ships with a carbon steel standard lever handle, quarter turn (90 degrees) open to close. Locking lever and the NIB-SEAL insulated handle are handle options in the series rather than what comes on the standard S-595-Y, so if you need lockout-tagout capability or a handle that won't sweat on chilled water, specify that option at order time.
7) Does the S-595-Y meet the MSS SP-110 spec called out on my drawings?
Yes, the valve conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard for ball valves with threaded, solder, grooved and flared ends. If the engineer's spec line reads MSS SP-110, full port, bronze body, 600 CWP, solder ends, this valve answers all four.
8) Any concern about the PTFE seats when I sweat this valve in?
Yes, and it's the most common way these get ruined. The seats are PTFE and the handle stem packing is in the center section, so open the valve fully before you torch the end caps and keep the flame on the cup, not the body. On a three-piece like this you also have the option of pulling the center section out entirely, soldering the two end caps to the copper cold, and reassembling once everything has cooled.
9) What are the ball, stem and seats made of on the S-595-Y?
Chrome plated brass ball, silicon bronze stem, and PTFE seat rings. The stem is blowout-proof, and the body is dezincification resistant bronze with bronze trim. PTFE seats give good chemical resistance across the pressure range, which is why this valve gets used on process and high pressure lines rather than just plain water isolation.
10) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 1 inch solder ball valve?
