Nibco NJ831XD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco S-585-80-LF solder ball valve work on copper tube, or do I need threaded pipe?
Solder only. The S-585-80-LF has female solder cup ends, so it sweats directly onto copper tube. If the run is threaded iron or you want a union you can break later, this is the wrong end connection, and you would need a threaded-end bronze ball valve instead.
2) Is the Nibco S-585-80-LF ball valve approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The S-585-80-LF is a lead-free* bronze ball valve carrying NSF/ANSI/CAN-61, NSF/ANSI/CAN-372 and IAPMO/ANSI Z1157, which is the set a plumbing inspector looks for on potable water. Nibco HydraPure lead-free* markings are cast on both the handle and the body, so the valve can be identified as lead-free after it is installed and the paperwork is long gone.
3) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco S-585-80-LF bronze ball valve handle?
600 psi (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum temperature rating of 300 degrees F. That covers domestic hot and cold water and hydronic heating loops. It also conforms to MSS SP-110, which is the ball valve standard usually called out on mechanical drawings.
4) Full port or standard port, and does it matter for a 2 inch water main shutoff?
Full port. The ball bore matches the nominal pipe size, so a 2 inch valve passes roughly 2 inches of flow with almost no added pressure drop. That is what you want on a building main, a pump suction, or any run where head loss is already tight. A standard (reduced) port valve throttles down to a smaller bore and costs you pressure, which is fine on a branch shutoff but not on the main.
5) What is the ball and stem made of on the Nibco S-585-80-LF, and will it dezincify?
Body, ball and stem are all Silicon Performance Bronze, and the valve is rated dezincification resistant. That is the reason to spec it over a brass ball valve on aggressive or softened water, where zinc leaching eats out standard brass over time. The seats are RPTFE, reinforced PTFE, which holds up better than plain PTFE at the top of the 300 degree F range.
6) Can I lock out a Nibco S-585 ball valve for maintenance, or does it just come with a plain lever?
It ships with the standard carbon steel lever handle. Nibco offers the S-585 with optional handle configurations instead, including a Locking Lever and NIB-SEAL for lockout, plus Memory Stop for repeatable throttling, Extended Lever for insulated lines, and Round and Wing handles. If your facility requires a lockable shutoff, specify one of those handle options at order time rather than adding it later.
7) Two-piece versus three-piece ball valve, which should I put in on a 2 inch copper line?
Two-piece, like the S-585-80-LF, is a sealed body: you sweat it in and it stays in. It is the common choice for shutoffs and isolation where the valve is never expected to be serviced. A three-piece has bolted-apart body halves so the center section can be pulled for seat replacement without cutting the pipe, which matters on process lines or where you rebuild rather than replace. For building water isolation, the two-piece is the normal spec.
8) Is a blowout-proof stem worth specifying on a bronze ball valve?
It is the difference between a stuck valve and a soaked mechanical room. A blowout-proof stem, which the S-585-80-LF has, is retained from inside the body so line pressure cannot drive it out if the packing nut backs off or someone overtorques the handle. On a 600 psi rated valve on a potable main that is a meaningful safety detail, and it is why this style is the one that gets specified for commercial work.
9) How much room do I need to operate a Nibco two-piece bronze ball valve after it is installed?
Enough for a quarter turn of the lever, 90 degrees open to close. That is the practical clearance question on a tight ceiling or a crowded riser: the handle sweeps a quarter circle, so leave that arc clear of joists, insulation and adjacent pipe. If the swing will not clear, the Extended Lever handle option moves the grip out past the insulation line.
