Nibco NJ998XD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco S-FP600A-LF ball valve solder directly onto copper tube, or do I need adapters?
It solders straight on. The S-FP600A-LF has female solder cup ends on both sides (C x C), so it drops into a copper line with no threaded adapters or unions. Sweat the cups the way you would any copper fitting of that size. If your line is threaded iron or PEX, this is the wrong end configuration and you'd need a threaded-end or press-end valve instead.
2) What pressure can the Nibco S-FP600A-LF ball valve take?
600 psi (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure in the 3/8 inch through 2 inch sizes, and 400 psi (27.6 bar) in 2-1/2 inch and 3 inch. So the 2-1/2 inch size carries a lower rating than the small sizes, which matters if you're standardizing a riser on one pressure number across mixed diameters.
3) Does a full port ball valve like the Nibco S-FP600A-LF actually matter, or is standard port fine?
Full port means the ball bore matches the line size, so an open 1-1/2 inch valve passes essentially the full 1-1/2 inch flow with almost no added restriction. Standard (reduced) port necks down a size and costs you head. Pick full port on pump suction, main shutoffs, long runs where you're tight on pressure drop, and anywhere a line may need to be rodded or drained fast. On a short branch to a fixture, reduced port is usually fine and costs less.
4) What sizes does the Nibco S-FP600A-LF solder ball valve come in?
Four sizes are stocked: 3/8 inch (MPN NJ998X5), 1-1/2 inch (NJ998XC), 2 inch (NJ998XD), and 2-1/2 inch (NJ998XE). Order by the copper tube size the cups have to accept, not by the valve body OD.
5) Can I operate the Nibco S-FP600A-LF quickly for an emergency shutoff?
Quarter turn, 90 degrees open to closed, on a standard lever handle. One hand, no tool, no counting turns, and the handle position tells you at a glance whether the line is open (handle in line with the pipe) or shut. That is the reason ball valves get specified at unit isolation and riser shutoffs instead of gate valves.
6) Is the Nibco S-FP600A-LF a two-piece or three-piece valve, and can it be serviced in place?
Two-piece. The body splits into two sections rather than three, which makes it compact and economical, but it is not a serviceable-in-line design: you can't unbolt a center section and pull the ball out with the end connections left soldered in the pipe. If you need to rebuild or clean the valve without cutting copper, spec a three-piece valve instead. For general shutoff duty where the valve gets replaced rather than rebuilt, two-piece is the normal choice.
7) Will heat from soldering damage the Nibco S-FP600A-LF, and should I solder it open or closed?
Solder it with the ball in the full open position and keep the flame on the cup, off the center body, so the seats don't take direct heat. That's standard practice on any solder-end brass ball valve. Nibco publishes a 2-Piece Bronze/Brass Ball Valves IOM manual with the full installation procedure, and the valve selection guide and technical data sheet cover the engineering detail.
8) What are the ball and stem made of on the Nibco lead-free solder ball valve?
Brass ball and brass stem, in a lead-free brass body, with a blowout-proof stem. Blowout-proof means the stem is installed from inside the body, so line pressure seats it rather than pushing it out if the packing nut is ever loosened under pressure. That's the safety detail that matters when a maintenance tech tightens a weeping stem on a live line.
