Nibco NL998HA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Nibco T-FP600A ball valve connect to pipe, do I need to solder it?
No soldering. Both ends are female NPT thread (FIPT), so it threads onto male-threaded pipe or nipples with tape or dope. That is what makes it the practical choice on a repair or a retrofit where you cannot get a torch near the line, or on plastic-to-metal transitions where you thread a male adapter in.
2) Can I use the Nibco T-FP600A on potable drinking water?
No. Use of this brass ball valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a non-potable valve, so keep it on hydronic heat, compressed air, chilled water, fire protection and similar service and specify a lead-free valve for anything a person drinks from.
3) Is the Nibco T-FP600A approved for gas service?
It carries a 5 psi rated gas pressure per CGA CR91-002 / ASME B16.44, and the CR91-002 threaded listing covers 1/4 inch through 4 inch. Note the low gas number against the 600 psi water rating: on fuel gas you are limited to 5 psi regardless of what the liquid rating says.
4) Is this Nibco brass ball valve UL listed or FM approved for a fire protection line?
Both, with different size coverage. The threaded valve is UL Listed from 1/4 inch through 4 inch and FM Approved from 1/4 inch through 2 inch. If your fire protection spec calls for FM approval, that caps you at 2 inch on this model.
5) What pressure is the Nibco T-FP600A rated for?
600 psi (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure in the 1/4 inch through 2 inch sizes, and 400 psi (27.6 bar) in 2-1/2 inch through 4 inch. That is the number to check against your system, and it is why the larger sizes carry a different rating than the model designation suggests.
6) What is the ball and stem made of on the Nibco T-FP600A, and will the stem blow out under pressure?
Chrome-plated brass ball and stem in a brass body, and the stem is blowout-proof, meaning it seats from inside the body so line pressure cannot drive it out if the packing nut is backed off. That matters on a valve you will be repacking in service rather than replacing.
7) Two-piece vs one-piece brass ball valve, which should I be buying?
The T-FP600A is a two-piece body with a full port ball, so the bore is not restricted the way a one-piece valve's is. One-piece bodies are cheaper and fine for isolation on small branch lines where a little pressure drop does not matter. Pick the two-piece full port when the valve sits in a main, feeds a pump or boiler loop, or has to pass a cleaning brush or camera without a step down in bore.
8) Does the Nibco T-FP600A come with a handle, or do I order that separately?
A standard carbon steel lever handle is included. It is quarter-turn, 90 degrees from full open to full closed, so plan for lever swing clearance beside the valve, especially in a tight joist bay or a crowded mechanical room where the handle has to clear adjacent pipe.
9) I need to isolate a 3 inch threaded line, will this valve work at that size?
Yes. The 3 inch is MPN NL998HF and the 4 inch is NL998HH, both full port with female NPT ends. Watch two things at those sizes: the working pressure drops to 400 psi, and FM approval stops at 2 inch, so a 3 inch valve on an FM-specified job is not the right part.
