Nibco NL9500A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco T-585-70 bronze ball valve on a potable water line?
No. The T-585-70 is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. Keep it on non-potable service: hydronic heating and chilled water loops, compressed air, mechanical and industrial piping. For potable domestic water you need a valve that meets the current lead-free requirement, so specify a lead-free bronze or brass ball valve rather than this one.
2) What size pipe does the Nibco T-585-70 ball valve thread onto, and what kind of thread is it?
Both ends are female NPT (FIPT) threads, so it screws directly onto male-threaded steel, brass, or copper adapters with no soldering. Sizes run 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Match the valve size to the nominal pipe size, tape or dope the male threads, and back up on the valve body when you wrench it.
3) Will a full port ball valve restrict flow in my line?
Not meaningfully. The T-585-70 is full port, meaning the bore through the ball is close to the same diameter as the pipe it is threaded into, so pressure drop across the open valve is minimal. That matters on pump suction lines, main shutoffs, and anywhere you plan to run a camera or snake through. A standard port valve of the same nominal size has a smaller bore and will throttle flow more.
4) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco T-585-70 handle?
600 PSI (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, 150 PSI (10.3 bar) saturated steam, and a maximum temperature of 400 degrees F. That covers ordinary hydronic and chilled water work with a lot of margin, and it is rated for steam service at the 150 PSI figure. The valve conforms to MSS SP-110.
5) Is the Nibco T-585-70 bronze valve safe on aggressive or high-chloride water without the brass dezincifying?
The body is bronze and the valve is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that cracks and leaches ordinary yellow brass valves in aggressive water. The stem is silicon bronze and the trim package is bronze; the ball itself is brass with a hard chrome plate. For a building where brass valves have been failing at the threads, the bronze body and bronze trim are the reason to pick this one.
6) Does the Nibco T-585-70 come with a handle, or do I have to order one?
A carbon steel standard lever handle comes on the valve. It is a quarter-turn, 90 degrees from full open to full closed, so you can read valve position off the handle: in line with the pipe is open, across the pipe is closed. A NIB-SEAL handle is offered as an option in place of the standard lever. Leave clearance beside the pipe for the handle to swing before you set the valve.
7) Two-piece versus three-piece bronze ball valve, which should I install?
A two-piece body like the T-585-70 is the right call for a shutoff you install and forget: fewer joints, less to leak, and it threads in as one unit. What it will not do is come apart in the line. A three-piece valve unbolts at the union so you can swap the seats or pull the ball without cutting the pipe, which is what you want on equipment isolation that gets serviced. For a branch shutoff, riser isolation, or anywhere the valve outlives the maintenance cycle, two-piece is the simpler part.
8) Can the T-585-70 ball valve be left in a half-open position to throttle flow?
Don't. Ball valves are on-off devices, and partially closing one puts the flow stream across the edge of the RPTFE seat, which erodes it and eventually leaves you with a valve that will not shut tight. Run it fully open or fully closed and use a globe or balancing valve where you actually need to throttle.
9) Is the stem on the Nibco T-585-70 blowout-proof, and does that matter for a valve above a ceiling?
The stem is blowout-proof, meaning it is retained from inside the body so line pressure cannot drive it out if the packing nut is backed off or the handle is removed. On concealed valves above ceilings, in chases, or in mechanical rooms where someone may service the packing under pressure, that is the feature that keeps a nuisance drip from becoming a flood.
10) I need to standardize shutoff valves across a building, does the T-585-70 cover all my branch sizes?
Sizes 1/4 through 2 inch are all the same T-585-70 design, so one valve model covers fixture branches, small equipment drops, and 2 inch mains with identical bronze body, RPTFE seats, and lever operation throughout. That keeps one spare kit and one operating procedure across the facility. The limits to plan around: no potable water service, and 2 inch is the top of the range, so anything larger needs a different valve.
