1) Is the Nibco T-585-70-HC a hose bibb style valve, and what are the two ends?
It's a boiler drain / hose connection ball valve. One end is threaded NPT pipe thread, the other is a 3/4 inch hose thread outlet with a cap and chain so the port stays closed when nothing is hooked up. That makes it the fitting to use where you want a shutoff plus a place to attach a garden hose for draining or filling, rather than a straight in-line shutoff.
2) Can I use this Nibco bronze ball valve on a potable water line?
No. Nibco states use of the T-585-70-HC in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Put it on hydronic, boiler drain, mechanical and industrial service instead. For a potable line you need a valve carrying a low-lead potable rating.
3) What pipe size does the Nibco T-585-70-HC drain valve come in?
It is offered in 3/4 inch. The pipe end is NPT thread, so it threads onto 3/4 inch male pipe thread, and the hose side is 3/4 inch hose thread, which is the standard garden hose size.
4) What pressure and temperature can the T-585-70-HC handle?
600 PSI / 41.4 bar non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum temperature rating of 400 degrees F. Shutoff is bubble tight at the full 600 PSI. That covers typical hydronic and compressed air service well inside the rating.
5) What is the ball and stem made of, and will it hold up in hard water?
The ball is brass with a hard chrome plate and the stem is silicon bronze, in a bronze body with bronze trim. Seats are reinforced PTFE. Nibco lists the valve as dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters where water chemistry attacks ordinary brass.
6) Does this Nibco ball valve meet MSS SP-110?
Yes, the T-585-70-HC conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard covering threaded and solder-end ball valves. That is the spec most commonly called out on mechanical drawings for bronze ball valves.
7) Does the T-585-70-HC come with a handle, or do I order that separately?
A standard carbon steel lever handle is included. Operation is quarter turn, 90 degrees from open to close, so you can read valve position off the handle at a glance.
8) Will the stem blow out if the packing is backed off under pressure?
No. The T-585-70-HC uses a blowout-proof stem design, so the stem is retained from inside the body and cannot be driven out through the top under line pressure. It's a two-piece bronze body construction.
