Nibco NJ83806 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What kind of connections does the Nibco S-585-70-HC ball valve have on each end?
One end is a female solder cup that sweats onto copper tube, and the other is a 3/4 inch male hose thread outlet with a cap and chain. So it solders into the line and gives you a hose bibb style drain or fill point on the outlet side. The hose end is 3/4 inch regardless of the pipe size you order.
2) Can I use this Nibco bronze ball valve on potable drinking water?
No. The S-585-70-HC is not for U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. Use it on non-potable service: hydronic heating loops, chilled water, mechanical drain downs, equipment fill and flush points. For potable lines you need a valve that meets the current lead-free requirement.
3) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S-585-70-HC come in?
Two sizes on the solder end: 1/2 inch (MPN NJ83806) and 3/4 inch (MPN NJ83808). Both carry the same 3/4 inch hose outlet, so a 1/2 inch copper branch still gets a full size hose connection.
4) Is this a full port valve, or will it restrict flow in my line?
It's a full port ball valve, so the bore matches the line size and the pressure drop across it is minimal. That matters when you're using it as a boiler drain or system fill point and want to move water fast.
5) What pressure and temperature can the S-585-70-HC handle?
600 PSI (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure with bubble-tight shutoff, and a maximum temperature rating of 400 degrees F. That covers typical hydronic and mechanical room service well above operating conditions.
6) Should I use a solder-end hose connection valve or a threaded one?
The S-585-70-HC has a solder cup, so it sweats directly onto copper tube with no adapter and no thread sealant, which gives you a lower profile joint at a boiler or air handler. If the line is steel or PEX, or you need to be able to break the joint later without heat, a threaded end valve is the better pick. Note the solder end means you cannot sweat it with the ball in a half-open position or with the seats loaded, so follow Nibco's installation instructions for soldering.
7) Does this valve meet a recognized valve standard for a spec job?
It conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard covering threaded, socket welding and solder joint ball valves. That is the standard commonly called out on mechanical submittals for bronze ball valves.
8) Can I use this as a boiler drain or system drain-down valve?
That is what the hose end is for. The 3/4 inch hose outlet takes a standard garden hose for draining or flushing, and the cap and chain keeps it closed and tethered when not in use. Full port bore and 400 degree F rating suit hot hydronic drain points.
9) What are the ball, stem and seat made of on this Nibco valve?
Bronze body with bronze trim, a brass ball with hard chrome plate, a silicon bronze blowout-proof stem, and reinforced PTFE seat rings. The body is dezincification resistant. Operation is a carbon steel standard lever handle, quarter turn open to close.
