Nibco NJ8300D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco S-580-70 bronze ball valve on domestic drinking water?
No. The S-580-70 is prohibited for use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is built for commercial and light industrial service such as HVAC, hot water heating, low pressure steam, and non-potable hot and cold water. For potable water lines you need a lead-free rated valve instead.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S-580-70 solder ball valve come in?
Five sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Order by size code, for example NJ8300B for 1-1/4 inch, NJ8300D for 2 inch, and NJ8300F for 3 inch. Ends are female solder cups, so each one sweats directly onto copper tube of the matching nominal size.
3) What is the pressure and temperature rating on the Nibco S-580-70 ball valve?
600 psi (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, 150 psi (10.3 bar) saturated steam, and a maximum temperature of 400 degrees F. That steam rating is what makes it usable on low pressure steam and hot water heating loops, not just chilled and condenser water.
4) Is a conventional port ball valve a problem if I need full flow through the line?
Conventional port (also called standard or reduced port) means the ball bore is smaller than the pipe ID, so there is more pressure drop than a full port valve of the same size. For shutoff and isolation duty on HVAC and heating lines that is normal and acceptable. If your design calls for minimum restriction, say on a pump suction or a line sized tight on head loss, specify a full port bronze ball valve in the same size instead.
5) Should I pick solder ends or threaded ends for a copper HVAC line?
The S-580-70 has female solder cups, which sweat straight onto copper tube with no adapters and give a lower profile joint. Use it where you are already brazing or soldering copper. If you are tying into steel pipe, or you want to be able to break the valve out without heat, order a threaded bronze ball valve instead. One caution with solder ends: the valve must be soldered in the open position and heat kept off the body center so the seats are not damaged.
6) What are the ball, stem and seat made of on this Nibco bronze ball valve?
Bronze body with bronze trim, a hard chrome plated brass ball, a silicon bronze stem, and RPTFE (reinforced PTFE) seats. The stem is blowout-proof and the ball is vented. The material package is dezincification resistant, which matters on closed loop systems where water chemistry attacks ordinary brass.
7) Does this Nibco ball valve meet MSS SP-110?
Yes, the S-580-70 conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard covering ball valves with threaded, solder joint, grooved and flared ends. That is the line item most mechanical specs and submittals ask for on a bronze ball valve.
8) Does the S-580-70 come with an insulated handle for chilled water lines?
As supplied it carries a carbon steel standard lever handle, quarter turn open to close. The NIB-SEAL insulated handle that stops condensate dripping is an option on the bronze ball valve family, so if you are running chilled water and want it, specify the insulated handle version rather than assuming the standard lever.
9) Is this a two-piece or three-piece ball valve, and can it be serviced in line?
It is a two-piece body. Two-piece valves are not designed to be taken apart and rebuilt in the line the way a three-piece valve can be, so plan on replacing the valve rather than repacking the seats. If in-line serviceability is a requirement for that location, go with a three-piece bronze or brass ball valve.
10) Can I use the vented ball version on a system where the media could expand in the ball cavity?
The ball on the S-580-70 is vented, which relieves pressure trapped in the ball cavity when the valve is closed, so it suits steam and hot water service where thermal expansion is a concern. The flip side is that a vented ball is directional in service and is not intended as a bidirectional dead-end shutoff the way a solid ball is.
