Nibco NL9500D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Nibco T-580-70 bronze ball valve on potable water?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014, so keep the T-580-70 off potable lines. It is a bronze valve intended for non-potable service such as hydronic heating and chilled water, compressed air, and general commercial mechanical piping. For domestic water you need a lead-free certified valve instead.
2) What pressure and temperature is the Nibco T-580-70 rated for?
600 PSI (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure and 150 PSI (10.3 bar) saturated steam, with a maximum temperature of 400 degrees F. That covers typical commercial hydronic and chilled water loops with plenty of margin, and the 150 PSI steam rating means it can be used on low pressure steam service as well.
3) Is the T-580-70 a full port valve, and does that matter for flow?
It is conventional port, not full port. The ball bore is smaller than the pipe ID, so it restricts flow slightly more than a full port valve of the same size. For shutoff and isolation duty that is a non-issue, and it is why conventional port valves are the common choice for branch isolation. If you are sizing for minimum pressure drop, such as a pump suction or a main line where the valve stays open, specify a full port bronze ball valve instead.
4) Will a bronze ball valve hold up in a building with aggressive water, or will it dezincify?
The T-580-70 is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that kills brass valves in water with high chloride or aggressive chemistry. Body is bronze with bronze trim, the stem is silicon bronze, and the ball is brass with a hard chrome plate. For a property manager standardizing valves across a building, that combination is the reason to pick bronze over plain brass.
5) What standard does the Nibco T-580-70 ball valve conform to?
It conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard covering threaded and welded end ball valves. If the mechanical spec on your drawing calls out MSS SP-110 for isolation valves, the T-580-70 meets that callout.
6) Does the T-580-70 come with a handle, or do I order it separately?
A carbon steel standard lever handle ships on the valve. It is a quarter turn, 90 degrees from full open to full closed, so you can see valve position at a glance from the handle orientation. Nibco also offers the NIB-SEAL insulated handle option, which eliminates condensate dripping on chilled water lines, if you want that instead of the plain lever.
7) Can I sweat this valve onto copper, or does it have to be threaded pipe?
Threaded only. Both ends of the T-580-70 are female NPT, so it lands on threaded steel or on copper via a male adapter. If you are running copper and want to solder directly, order a solder-end Nibco two-piece bronze ball valve instead of this threaded body.
8) Is a two-piece bronze ball valve rebuildable in place, or do I replace the whole valve?
The T-580-70 is a two-piece body design, which means the body splits into two parts rather than the three-piece arrangement that lets you drop the center section out while the end pieces stay soldered or threaded in the line. For MRO stock, plan on replacing a two-piece valve rather than servicing it in place. If in-line rebuild matters on that run, specify a three-piece valve.
9) Is the stem on this Nibco bronze ball valve blowout proof?
Yes, the T-580-70 uses a blowout-proof stem, meaning the stem is loaded from inside the body and cannot be driven out through the packing under line pressure. That matters on a 600 PSI CWP valve where somebody may over-torque a stuck handle years down the line.
10) What are the seats made of on the T-580-70, and can it take steam and heat?
Reinforced PTFE (RPTFE) seats. That is what supports the 400 degree F maximum temperature and the 150 PSI saturated steam rating; plain PTFE seats generally cap out lower. On hot water and low pressure steam service the reinforced seat is the part doing the work.
