Nibco NJ998HA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco S-FP600A ball valve need to be soldered, or can I thread it onto copper?
It solders. The S-FP600A has female solder cup ends on both sides (C x C), so it slips over copper tube and gets sweated in place. There is no thread on it. If you need a threaded connection you want an FNPT-end ball valve instead, not this one. Because the seats are soldered in proximity to heat, follow Nibco's 2-piece bronze/brass ball valve IOM instructions for torch work.
2) What copper pipe sizes does the Nibco S-FP600A come in?
Five sizes: 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1-1/4 inch, and 3 inch. Order by the copper tube size you are sweating into, since the cups are sized to the tube. The 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1-1/4 inch valves fall in the range Nibco rates at 600 psi non-shock cold working pressure; the 3 inch is in the larger group rated 400 psi.
3) Can I use the Nibco S-FP600A on potable drinking water?
No. Nibco states that use of this valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a brass-bodied valve and does not meet the current lead-free requirement for potable lines. Use it on non-potable service: hydronic heating, chilled water, compressed air, and similar. For domestic water supply you need a valve certified to the lead-free standard.
4) Is the S-FP600A full port or standard port, and does it matter for flow?
Full port. The ball bore matches the nominal pipe size, so you get essentially no restriction across the valve and very little pressure drop. That matters on pump suction lines, on long hydronic runs where you are counting head, and anywhere you might want to push a brush or probe through. A standard-port valve of the same nominal size necks down internally and will cost you flow.
5) Two-piece versus three-piece ball valve - which should I be buying for a copper riser?
The S-FP600A is a two-piece body, which is the normal choice for a soldered copper line that you are not planning to service in place. It is compact and cheaper, but you cannot pull the center section out to rebuild it; if the seats fail you cut it out. A three-piece valve is what you want where the valve is on a line you expect to maintain, since the body bolts apart between two union end pieces and the ball and seats come out with the pipe left undisturbed. For a shutoff on a branch or riser, two-piece is the standard spec.
6) Is the Nibco S-FP600A appropriate for residential plumbing service?
It is classified for residential plumbing use, and it is a common general-service shutoff in both residential and commercial work. The one hard limit: not on drinking water lines in the U.S. after January 3, 2014. Keep it on hydronic heat, chilled water, and other non-potable service in the house or building.
7) Does this Nibco ball valve come with a handle, or do I order one separately?
A standard lever handle is included, carbon steel construction. Quarter turn, 90 degrees from full open to full closed, so you can see valve position at a glance from across a mechanical room. Nothing extra to buy to operate it.
8) Is the stem on the S-FP600A blowout-proof?
Yes, the stem is blowout-proof, meaning it is retained from inside the body so line pressure cannot drive it out if the packing nut is backed off or the handle hardware is removed. The ball and stem are both chrome-plated brass. That is the detail an MRO crew cares about when they are repacking a valve under partial pressure.
