Nibco NJ9600A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Nibco S-580-A brass ball valve on a potable water line?
No. The S-580-A is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is a brass valve without lead-free certification for potable service, so keep it on non-potable work: hydronic heating loops, chilled water, compressed air, and similar closed systems. For domestic water you need a lead-free rated ball valve instead.
2) Does the Nibco S-580-A solder onto copper tube or does it thread on?
It solders. Both ends are female solder cups, C x C, so the valve sweats directly onto copper tube of the matching nominal size. There are no threads on either end. If your piping is threaded iron or you want a serviceable union joint, you want a threaded (FIPT) ball valve or a press-end valve instead.
3) Is the S-580-A a full port valve?
No, it is a standard (conventional) port valve. The ball bore is smaller than the pipe bore, so there is more pressure drop through it than a full port valve of the same size. For isolation duty on a branch that is fine. Where flow restriction matters, such as a pump suction or a main shutoff sized tight, step up to a full port model.
4) Can I use this valve as a shutoff behind a washing machine or under a sink in an apartment?
Not for domestic water. Even though it is listed for residential plumbing systems, its use in U.S. drinking water is prohibited after January 3, 2014, which rules out fixture supply and laundry hookups. Property managers standardizing shutoffs on potable lines need a lead-free valve. Keep the S-580-A for boiler, hydronic and other non-potable circuits in the building.
5) What copper pipe sizes does the Nibco S-580-A ball valve come in?
Six sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, ordered as NJ96006, NJ96008, NJ9600A, NJ9600B, NJ9600C and NJ9600D respectively. Size is nominal copper tube size and the cups match that tube directly, so a 3/4 inch valve sweats onto 3/4 inch copper.
6) What pressure will the Nibco S-580-A hold?
400 psi (27.6 bar) non-shock cold working pressure. That covers ordinary building water and hydronic pressures with wide margin. It is a CWP rating, so it applies to cold non-shock service, not steam.
7) Do I need to take the S-580-A apart before soldering it in?
It is a two-piece brass valve with PTFE seats, and PTFE will not survive unlimited torch heat. Open the valve fully before sweating, keep the flame on the tube rather than the body, and follow the Nibco 2-Piece Bronze/Brass Ball Valves IOM Manual for the soldering procedure. The manual is the governing instruction for installation.
8) Is a two-piece ball valve like this one rebuildable, or is it a throwaway?
Treat it as a replace-in-kind valve. The S-580-A two-piece body is not built for in-line seat service the way a three-piece union-end valve is; a three-piece lets you pull the center body and reseat it without cutting the pipe. If a valve sits on a line you expect to service repeatedly, specify a three-piece. For general shutoff and isolation, the two-piece solder-end is the usual choice.
9) What are the ball, stem and seats made of on this Nibco two-piece valve?
Chrome-plated brass ball with a brass stem, running on PTFE seats, in a brass body. The stem is blowout-proof, so it cannot be driven out of the body under line pressure if the packing nut is loosened. Handle is a standard lever, giving quarter-turn open to close.
