Nibco NJ83XHD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco S-585-66-LF ball valve have solder ends or threaded ends?
Solder. The S-585-66-LF uses female solder cups on both ends, so it sweats directly onto copper tube. If the piping is threaded iron or you need a union connection, this is the wrong end style and you want a threaded-end bronze ball valve instead.
2) What size pipe does the Nibco S-585-66-LF bronze ball valve fit?
It is a 2 inch valve, with 2 inch female solder cups sized for copper tube. Only the 2 inch size is offered under the S-585-66-LF designation here.
3) Is the Nibco S-585-66-LF approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The valve carries NIBCO HydraPure lead-free markings on both the handle and the body, and conforms to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, plus IAPMO/ANSI Z1157. That is the combination an inspector looks for on a domestic water line. The bronze body is also dezincification resistant, which matters on aggressive or high-chloride water.
4) Is the Nibco S-585-66-LF a two-piece or three-piece body, and can it be serviced in line?
Two-piece. The body splits into two sections rather than three, which makes it compact and economical but means it is not a serviceable in-line valve the way a three-piece is. With a three-piece design you can unbolt the center section and replace seats without disturbing the soldered end pieces. On a two-piece solder-end valve like this one, replacement means cutting it out. If in-line rebuild matters on your system, specify a three-piece bronze ball valve instead.
5) Full port or standard port on the Nibco S-585-66 ball valve, and does it matter?
Full port. The bore through the ball matches the nominal 2 inch line size, so there is effectively no restriction and no added pressure drop at the valve. That is what you want on pump suction, main shutoffs, and any line where you may need to push a brush or camera through. A standard (reduced) port valve in the same size necks down and throttles flow.
6) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco S-585 bronze ball valve handle?
600 psi (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum temperature rating of 300 degrees F. That covers domestic hot and cold water, hydronic heating loops, and typical compressed air and light industrial service. Remember the valve is solder-end, so the joint itself becomes the limiting factor at elevated temperature, not the bronze body.
7) What are the ball, stem and seats made of on the Nibco S-585-66-LF?
Stainless steel ball and stainless steel stem, which is the stainless trim package, running against reinforced PTFE (RPTFE) seats. Stainless trim holds up better than chrome-plated brass on water with sediment or on systems treated with chemicals, and RPTFE seats give more creep resistance and a higher temperature ceiling than plain PTFE. The body is Silicon Performance Bronze.
8) Why is the ball vented on this Nibco lead-free ball valve?
A vented ball relieves pressure that would otherwise be trapped in the ball cavity when the valve is closed. On liquid service, fluid sealed in that cavity can expand with a temperature rise and over-pressurize the valve. The vent bleeds it back upstream. It also means the valve has a defined upstream side, so orient it accordingly on the line. The stem is blowout-proof, seated from inside the body.
9) Can I lock out the Nibco S-585 ball valve for maintenance or add a memory stop?
It ships with the standard carbon steel lever handle, but Nibco offers optional handle configurations for this valve including NIB-SEAL, a locking lever, a memory stop, an extended lever, and round and wing handles. The locking lever is what you specify for lockout/tagout on an MRO or facility line; the memory stop is what you use when the valve is being set for a fixed balancing position.
10) What standard does the Nibco S-585-66-LF ball valve conform to for spec submittals?
It conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard covering threaded, socket-welding, solder-joint and flared-end ball valves, and carries NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 and IAPMO/ANSI Z1157. Those four are usually what the mechanical spec calls out for a lead-free bronze shutoff on potable water.
11) Any tips for soldering in the Nibco S-585 without damaging the valve?
Open the valve to the full position before you heat it. Quarter-turn (90 degrees) from closed to open, so the lever ends up in line with the pipe. Keeping the ball open protects the reinforced PTFE seats from the heat concentrated at the solder cups, and keep the flame on the fitting rather than on the body. The stainless ball and stem tolerate the heat; the RPTFE seats are the part you are protecting.
