Nibco NL95X0A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Nibco T-585-S6-R-66-LL ball valve thread onto my existing NPT pipe, or do I need adapters?
The T-585-S6-R-66-LL has female NPT threaded ends (FIPT) on both sides, so it screws directly onto male NPT pipe nipples or threaded pipe ends in the matching size. No soldering, no grooving, no flanges. Sizes run 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 2 inch, and the valve size must match the pipe size, you are not adapting up or down inside the valve.
2) Is the Nibco T-585-S6-R-66-LL full port, and will it restrict flow in a pump or process line?
Full port. The ball bore matches the nominal pipe size, so a 1 inch valve passes a full 1 inch opening with essentially no throttling of the line. That is what you want ahead of a pump suction, on a metering or sample line, or anywhere you plan to run a pig or brush through. A standard port valve would neck the flow down at the ball, this one does not.
3) Is this stainless ball valve OK for potable water, and is it lead-free?
The T-585-S6-R-66-LL is listed as a lead-free application valve, with a stainless steel body, ball and stem and stainless trim, so there is no brass or bronze wetted component to carry lead. That is what makes it usable on drinking water lines in a building where the code requires lead-free, as well as on the process piping it is more commonly specified for.
4) Should I use a stainless ball valve or a bronze one on a chemical process line?
Go stainless when the media attacks copper alloys, when you are on a washdown or corrosive-atmosphere line, or when the spec calls for an all stainless wetted path. The T-585 is stainless body, ball and stem with a reinforced PTFE seat, a combination Nibco recommends for process piping because of its chemical resistance. Bronze ball valves are the cheaper choice on ordinary building water and compressed air, where corrosion is not the issue. If the line is corrosive or the fluid is aggressive, the bronze valve is the false economy.
5) What does the vented ball on the Nibco T-585 do, and when do I need it?
The ball is vented, meaning a small hole relieves fluid trapped in the ball cavity back to one side of the valve when it is closed. That matters on liquids that expand when warmed, including cryogenic and volatile service, where a sealed cavity can build enough pressure to damage the seats. It also makes the valve directional in the sense that the vent relieves toward one port, so install it with flow oriented per Nibco's instructions rather than dropping it in either way without checking. The stem is blowout-proof, so line pressure cannot push it out of the body if the packing is disturbed.
6) Can I replace an existing two-piece threaded ball valve with a Nibco T-585 without repiping?
If what is coming out is a two-piece threaded ball valve of the same nominal size with female NPT ends, this drops into the same union or nipple arrangement, since the T-585-S6-R-66-LL is a two-piece body with FIPT ends. The catch is face-to-face length, which is not the same across valve makes and patterns, so on a rigid run with no union you may need to cut and re-thread. Measure the old valve end to end before you pull it. A soldered, grooved or flanged valve is not a swap, that is a repipe.
7) Is a Nibco T-585 a quarter-turn valve, and how much clearance do I need for the handle?
Quarter-turn, 90 degrees from full open to full closed. Plan the swing before you set the valve in place, the lever sweeps a quarter circle in the plane perpendicular to the pipe and it is the handle, not the body, that hits the wall or the adjacent line in a tight mechanical room. On the larger 2 inch size that lever is long. If clearance is genuinely a problem, mount the valve so the handle swings into open space, or use the ISO pad for a gear or actuator instead.
8) What are the seats made of in the Nibco T-585, and does that limit the service temperature?
Reinforced PTFE (RPTFE) seat rings against a stainless ball. The reinforcement is what lets the seat carry the 1,000 PSI cold working pressure and reach the 400 degree F maximum temperature rating, plain PTFE would cold flow well before that. RPTFE is also the reason this valve holds up on chemical service where an elastomer seat would swell or degrade. Remember the pressure and temperature limits are not simultaneous, full pressure is a cold rating.
