Nibco NR84H0A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco PS-585-70-66 press ball valve need soldering, or does it crimp onto copper tube?
No torch required. The PS-585-70-66 has male press stub ends on both sides, so it crimps onto copper tube with a press tool and the correct jaw or chain for the size. After a proper crimp a raised "N" witness mark shows on the fitting so an inspector can see the joint was pressed. You still need the pressing tool and jaws separately, they do not come with the valve.
2) What copper pipe sizes does this Nibco press ball valve come in?
Six sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Both ends are the same size, press by press, so it drops straight into a run of copper of that diameter. Size matters for one other reason here: the NSF/ANSI 61 certification is called out for the 1/2 inch through 1 inch sizes.
3) Can I use this Nibco bronze press ball valve on domestic drinking water?
Read the label on this one before you specify it. Nibco states the valve is UL Certified to NSF/ANSI 61 in the 1/2 inch through 1 inch sizes, but also states that use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Plan it for mechanical HVAC, hydronic heating, process and irrigation water rather than potable service.
4) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the Nibco PS-585-70-66 ball valve?
200 psi non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum service temperature of 250 degrees F. That covers typical hydronic heating loops, chilled water and condenser water, and standard domestic-pressure process lines. It is not a steam valve.
5) Is this a full port ball valve or reduced port?
Full port. The bore through the ball matches the line size, so there is no throttling of flow at the valve, which is what you want on a pump suction, a main shutoff or any circuit where you are counting head loss. Reduced port valves cost you pressure drop you have to make up somewhere.
6) Will this bronze valve hold up in a system with aggressive water that eats up brass fittings?
The two-piece body is dezincification resistant bronze, which is the material you specify where water chemistry is stripping zinc out of ordinary brass and leaving it porous. The trim is stainless steel and the seats are reinforced PTFE, so the wetted internals are not relying on brass either.
7) Does the Nibco PS-585-70-66 meet a recognized valve standard for a spec job?
It conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard covering ball valves with threaded, socket welding, solder joint, grooved and flared ends. That is the line to put on the submittal, along with the 200 psi CWP rating and the dezincification resistant bronze body.
8) What does a blowout-proof stem and a vented ball actually do on a ball valve?
Two different safety features. The stainless steel stem is retained from inside the body, so line pressure cannot drive it out of the top if the packing nut is loosened or the handle is removed. The vented ball relieves pressure that gets trapped in the ball cavity when the valve is closed, which is what prevents cavity pressure build-up on liquid service as the fluid warms.
9) How is this press ball valve operated, and how much clearance do I need beside it?
A carbon steel standard lever handle, quarter turn from full open to bubble-tight closed. Allow room for the lever to swing 90 degrees at the side of the valve, which is the usual pinch point in tight joist bays and behind access panels. Handle position also gives you a visual open/closed indication at a glance.
10) Can I use this valve as a shutoff on a fire sprinkler or irrigation line?
Nibco lists this press ball valve for automatic sprinkler systems, irrigation, commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC and industrial service. For sprinkler work, check what your local authority requires for supervised control valves, since a lever ball valve is often used for auxiliary and drain service rather than as the main supervised control.
