Nibco NR8400A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco PS-585-70 press ball valve on potable drinking water?
No. The PS-585-70 is not for U.S. drinking water service, use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is intended for HVAC, hydronic heating, non-potable process water, irrigation, industrial lines and automatic sprinkler systems. For potable domestic water you need a lead-free press ball valve instead.
2) What ends does the Nibco PS-585-70 have, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. Both ends are male press stub ends, so the valve's own copper stubouts slide into a press fitting or a press coupling and get crimped with a press tool and jaw. That is the reverse of most press valves, which have female press sockets you push tube into. Plan your takeoffs accordingly: you press the valve's stubs into the run, not the tube into the valve.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco PS-585-70 bronze ball valve handle?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum service temperature of 250 degrees F. That covers typical hydronic heating and chilled water loops and standard commercial domestic-pressure process lines. It conforms to MSS SP-110.
4) Is the Nibco PS-585-70 full port, and will it restrict flow?
Full port, with a brass ball, so the bore matches the line size and you get minimum pressure drop and turbulence. Flow is bi-directional, so there is no required install orientation for direction.
5) What sizes does the Nibco PS-585-70 come in?
Six copper tube sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Order by part number, NR84006 is 1/2 inch, NR84008 is 3/4, NR8400A is 1 inch, NR8410B is 1-1/4, NR8410C is 1-1/2 and NR8410D is 2 inch.
6) Is the Nibco PS-585-70 body dezincification resistant, and why does that matter?
Yes, the two-piece body is dezincification resistant bronze with a bronze stem and bronze trim. That matters on aggressive or chlorinated water where a standard brass body can lose zinc over time and fail at the wall. Seats are reinforced PTFE.
7) How do I verify a Nibco press valve joint was crimped correctly?
When the connection is properly pressed, a unique "N" witness mark shows on the crimp. If you cannot see it, the joint was not fully pressed. You will need a press tool with the matching jaws or chains from the NIBCO Press System for the tube size you are joining.
8) Does the Nibco PS-585-70 come with a handle, and can it be operated quickly in an emergency?
It ships with a carbon steel standard lever handle for quarter-turn open and close, with bubble-tight shutoff when closed. That makes it usable as an isolation or emergency shutoff at a riser or branch takeoff.
9) Can I use the PS-585-70 as a sprinkler system isolation valve?
It is listed for automatic sprinkler systems along with commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation. Confirm the 200 psi rating and 250 F ceiling suit your system, and check whether your AHJ requires a supervised or listed indicating valve at that point in the system.
10) Will the stem blow out under pressure if the packing is backed off?
No, the PS-585-70 uses a blowout-proof bronze stem, which is designed so line pressure cannot drive the stem out of the body during service.
