1) Can I use a Nibco press elbow on a domestic potable water line?
Yes. The PC606 is lead-free and third party certified to UPC, and Nibco lists it for residential and commercial potable, hot, chilled and process water, plus heating, HVAC, irrigation and automatic sprinkler systems. The copper is ASTM B75 alloy C12200 and it is dezincification resistant.
2) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco PC606 press fitting handle?
200 psi CWP, with a service range of -20F to 250F. That covers domestic water, hydronic heating and chilled water loops. It is not a steam fitting.
3) Do both ends of the PC606 elbow press, or is one end solder?
Both ends press. The end connection is Prs x Prs, so the elbow slips over copper tube on each side and gets crimped with a press tool and jaw sized for that fitting. There is no socket to sweat and no threads.
4) Do I need a special tool for Nibco PC606 press elbows?
Yes. Press fittings require a press tool with the correct jaw or chain for the fitting size. Nibco offers tools, jaws and chains as part of the Press System. A properly completed crimp shows the N witness mark on the fitting bead, which is how an inspector verifies the joint.
5) What sizes does the Nibco PC606 45-degree press elbow come in?
The PC606 wrot copper 45-degree elbow runs nine sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. It is a straight-size elbow, so both ends are the same size, press by press. Common order numbers are 9042800PC for 1/2 inch, 9043000PC for 1 inch, and 9043700PC for 4 inch.
6) When should I use a 45-degree elbow instead of a 90 on a copper run?
A 45 (1/8 bend) lets you offset around an obstruction or swing a run at a shallower angle without the pressure drop of two 90s. Typical use is a pair of 45s to jog a line around a beam or duct. The PC606 gives that bend in press, so you are not sweating in a tight spot near framing.
7) Can Nibco press copper fittings be buried underground?
Yes, Nibco states the Press System fittings can be installed underground. That makes the PC606 usable on buried water service and irrigation piping as well as inside the building.
