1) What does a 3-way 2-position diverter valve actually do in a piping system?
The Nibco S45D2-E is a 3-way ball valve set up as a 2-position diverter: the handle sends flow out one of two outlet ports rather than blending or throttling between them. Use it where you need to route a single supply to either of two destinations, for example alternating between two filter banks or two tanks. If you need simple on/off isolation on a single line, a two-way true union ball valve is the right part instead.
2) Can I use this PVC diverter valve on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly not to use or test this valve with compressed air or other gases. It is a liquid-service valve only, rated 150 psi at 73 F water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 140 F. For air service you need a valve rated for gas.
3) Will the EPDM seals in this valve handle my chemical?
Seats and O-rings are EPDM rubber, which suits water, many dilute acids and bases, and general irrigation or process water duty. EPDM is not compatible with petroleum oils and greases, so if your line carries oil-based fluid or if the system has been lubricated with POE or mineral oil, check the fluid against EPDM before committing. Nibco publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE exposure.
4) Do I have to cut the pipe out to service this valve?
No, and that is the point of the true union body. The valve and its working parts lift out of the line by loosening the two union nuts, with no disruption and no length change to the connected piping. A single-union or solvent-only valve has to be cut out and replaced.
5) Is this valve approved for potable water?
The S45D2-E carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is certified to ASTM F1970 for thermoplastic valves. It is listed for lead-free applications, which is what a potable or commercial plumbing spec usually calls for.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S45D2-E diverter valve come in?
Six socket sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. All of them are Schedule 80 PVC with solvent-weld socket ends, so the socket is sized for the matching nominal PVC pipe OD.
7) What do I need to join this valve to my PVC line?
The ends are S socket, meaning solvent weld, so you need PVC primer and Schedule 80 compatible solvent cement plus the matching nominal size pipe. Nothing threads on. If your system is threaded, you will need a threaded-end valve or adapters, since a socket valve cannot be screwed into place.
8) Is Schedule 80 PVC the right choice over Schedule 40 for an industrial diverter?
Schedule 80 has thicker walls and a higher pressure rating than Schedule 40 at the same nominal size, and the S45D2-E is built in Schedule 80 PVC for commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation duty. PVC resists rust, scale, pitting and corrosion, which is why it gets specified on chemical and water treatment lines where metal valves would attack. Pressure rating here is 150 psi at 73 F.
9) Can I run hot water through the Nibco S45D2-E?
Maximum service temperature is 140 F, so domestic hot water at typical delivery temperatures is at the edge and anything above 140 F is out. Also note the 150 psi rating is at 73 F; PVC pressure capability drops as temperature rises, so size the duty accordingly.
10) How will this valve look in a plant where we color-code our valves?
The body is dark grey Schedule 80 PVC with an orange handle, which is the standard Chemtrol look. The orange handle makes the diverter easy to pick out from two-way isolation valves in the same line.
