1) What does the 2-position diverter on the Nibco S45D2-V actually do in a piping system?
The S45D2-V is a 3-way, 2-position diverter ball valve: turning the handle sends flow down one of two outlet legs rather than blending or shutting off. Typical use is switching between duty and standby filters, two tanks, or a bypass loop without breaking pipe. It is not a mixing valve and it is not intended as a simple on/off isolation valve.
2) Will the Nibco S45D2-V glue onto Schedule 80 PVC pipe, and what sizes does it come in?
Yes. The valve has S socket weld ends for solvent cementing to Schedule 80 PVC, so no threading is needed. Sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Socket ends mean you need the pipe cut square and dry-fit before cementing, since there is no adjustment once the joint sets.
3) Can I service this PVC diverter valve without cutting the pipe out?
That is the point of the true union body. Both end connectors back off so the valve body and internals lift straight out of the line for repair or seal replacement, and the piping stays where it is with no change in length. That matters on solvent-welded socket systems, where a non-union valve would have to be cut out and re-piped.
4) What pressure and temperature can the Chemtrol S45D2-V handle?
Rated 150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. PVC loses pressure capability as temperature climbs, so hot process lines near the 140 degree limit should not be run at the full 150 psi figure.
5) Can I use this valve on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly that the valve must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing, so commission the line hydrostatically with water. Stored energy in a gas makes a thermoplastic failure hazardous.
6) Is this Nibco diverter valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings and is certified to ASTM F1970, and Nibco lists the valve as lead-free. Those are the certifications inspectors ask for on potable and commercial plumbing work. Listed uses cover commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service.
7) Is the FKM seal the right choice, or should I look at EPDM for my chemical?
The S45D2-V uses FKM fluoroelastomer O-rings and seals. FKM suits acids, hydrocarbons and many oxidizers, and it is the usual pick on chemical feed and industrial process water. It is the wrong elastomer for some ketones and hot water/steam service, where EPDM is normally specified instead. Nibco also publishes a POE warning on plastics incompatibility that is worth reading if the media is a refrigeration oil or solvent.
8) Which part number do I order for a 1-1/2 inch line?
For 1-1/2 inch socket, the Nibco part number is MA976AC. The rest of the range: MA976A6 for 1/2 inch, MA976A8 for 3/4 inch, MA976AA for 1 inch, MA976AB for 1-1/4 inch, and MA976AD for 2 inch. All are the same S45D2-V socket true union diverter with FKM seals.
9) Do I need a threaded version instead if I am tying into existing threaded PVC?
This version is socket only, so it solvent cements to plain-end pipe. Tying into threaded Schedule 80, you either use the matching threaded-end model of the Chemtrol true union diverter or cement a socket-by-MPT adapter to each of the three ports. Do not try to thread pipe into a socket port.
10) How do I tell this valve apart from a standard two-way PVC true union ball valve on site?
Look for the third port and the orange handle. The S45D2-V has three socket ports (one inlet, two outlets) and Nibco fits it with an orange handle on a dark grey Schedule 80 PVC body, which is how maintenance crews spot a diverter in a rack of two-way valves.
