1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S45M3-V 3-way multi-port ball valve come in?
The S45M3-V is made in six socket sizes: 1/2 inch (MA781A6), 3/4 inch (MA781A8), 1 inch (MA781AA), 1-1/4 inch (MA781AB), 1-1/2 inch (MA781AC) and 2 inch (MA781AD). All are PVC Schedule 80 with socket ends, so they solvent weld to Sch 80 PVC pipe of the matching size.
2) Can I thread this Chemtrol 3-way valve onto threaded PVC pipe?
No. The S45M3-V is built with S socket ends only, meaning it solvent cements to the outside of the pipe. If your run is threaded, you need threaded-end valve or a set of Sch 80 male adapters cemented into the sockets.
3) What pressure and temperature can this PVC true union multi-port valve handle?
150 psi at 73 F on non-shock water service, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 140 F. PVC loses pressure capability as temperature climbs, so hot water and steam lines are out. It also must never be used or pressure tested with compressed air or other gases.
4) Do I have to cut the pipe to service a Chemtrol true union valve?
No. The true union design lets the valve and its working parts lift straight out of the line for repair or replacement, with no piping disruption and no change in laying length. That is the practical reason to spend up from a single-union or solvent-in-line valve on a system you expect to maintain.
5) Can this 3-way valve divert flow between two branches, or does it only shut off?
It is a 3-way, 3-position multi-port ball valve, so one handle turn selects among the port combinations: feed one branch, feed the other, or the third position. That is what makes it useful for filter bypass, tank changeover and irrigation zone switching instead of stacking two separate two-way valves and a tee.
6) Is the Nibco S45M3-V approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings and is certified to ASTM F1970, and it is classed lead-free. Those are the listings specifiers ask for on potable and commercial plumbing work.
7) Why choose FKM seals over EPDM on a PVC ball valve?
The S45M3-V uses FKM fluoroelastomer for the seat seals and O-ring. FKM is the choice for many acids, hydrocarbons and oxidizers where EPDM would swell or break down. If your chemical is one FKM does not handle, an EPDM-sealed version of the same valve body is the alternative.
8) Will PVC Schedule 80 hold up in a corrosive chemical line better than metal pipe?
PVC Sch 80 has strong corrosion resistance and the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why these valves land in industrial and chemical service. The one caution Nibco publishes is plastics incompatibility with POE and certain refrigeration oils, so check the fluid against the material before you commit.
9) What does the valve look like once it is installed, for identifying it on a system walk?
