1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Chemtrol S51M3-V 3-way ball valve come in?
The S51M3-V multi-port true union ball valve is offered in five socket sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch. Part numbers run MB781A6 (1/2), MB781A8 (3/4), MB781AA (1), MB781AB (1-1/4) and MB781AC (1-1/2).
2) Will this Chemtrol valve solvent weld onto Schedule 80 CPVC pipe I already have?
Yes. The S51M3-V is built with S socket solvent weld end connections sized to Schedule 80 CPVC, so it cements directly to Sch 80 CPVC pipe of the matching nominal size. It will not thread on, and it is not a Sch 40 fitting body, so plan the joint as a standard solvent cement socket connection.
3) What is the pressure and temperature limit on this CPVC multi-port ball valve?
Rated 150 psi at 73 F, water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 210 F. The 150 psi figure is at 73 F only; CPVC pressure capability falls as temperature climbs toward that 210 F ceiling, so size the duty against your operating temperature, not the room-temperature number.
4) Can I use this valve on an air or compressed gas line?
No. The Chemtrol S51M3-V is a liquid service valve only. The manufacturer states plainly: do not use or test with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing, so hydrostatic test the line rather than air testing it. For compressed air service you need a metal valve.
5) Can I service this valve without cutting the CPVC pipe out?
That is the point of the true union design. The valve and its operating components lift out of the piping system for repair or replacement with no disruption to the connected pipe and no change in laid length. Solvent welded connections are permanent, so on a non-union valve the only way out is a saw and couplings; here the unions break instead.
6) Does this Chemtrol CPVC valve meet potable water and lead-free requirements for a commercial building?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application product. It also meets ASTM F1970 for plastic union and multi-port valves. That combination is what a facility or institutional spec normally asks for on commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service.
7) What does 3-way 3-position multi-port mean on this Chemtrol ball valve, and when would I use it instead of two separate valves?
It is a single ball valve body with three ports and a ball drilled so the handle selects among three positions, letting you divert flow between two outlets or shut off from one handle. That replaces a pair of two-way valves plus the tee and the extra solvent joints between them, which is why it gets used on filter changeovers, tank switching and bypass legs. If you only need straight on/off on one line, a standard two-way true union ball valve is the simpler buy.
8) Is the FKM seal the right choice for my chemical, or should I look at EPDM?
The S51M3-V uses FKM fluoroelastomer for the seat and O-ring seals. FKM generally suits oxidizers, acids and hydrocarbon-bearing media, while EPDM is the usual pick for other chemistries, so the elastomer, not the CPVC body, is normally what decides the valve on a chemical line. Note also the manufacturer's POE warning on plastics incompatibility, which matters if polyol ester oils are anywhere in the system.
9) Will a CPVC ball valve hold up better than metal in a corrosive or wet environment?
CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the reason it gets specified over brass or bronze on chemical feed, wastewater and irrigation lines where metal fails from the inside out. The tradeoff is the temperature and pressure ceiling, 210 F maximum service and 150 psi at 73 F, plus the hard rule against gas service. Where a line sees steam, compressed air or high heat, stay with metal.
