1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S51D2-V 3-way diverter ball valve come in?
The S51D2-V comes in five socket sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch. Part numbers run MB976A6 (1/2"), MB976A8 (3/4"), MB976AA (1"), MB976AB (1-1/4") and MB976AC (1-1/2"). All are Schedule 80 CPVC with solvent weld socket ends, so they take the matching Schedule 80 CPVC pipe OD.
2) Can I service this CPVC valve without cutting out the pipe?
No cutting required. The Chemtrol true union design lets the valve body and internals lift out of the piping system for repair or replacement with no disruption and no length change to the connected pipe. That is the practical reason to spec true union over a socket-only valve on a line you expect to maintain.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Chemtrol S51D2-V CPVC diverter valve handle?
Rated 150 psi at 73 F, water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 210 F. CPVC holds temperature better than PVC, which is why this one is specced for hot process and hot water lines. Pressure rating falls off as temperature climbs, so size the line against the Chemtrol pressure/temperature curve for your operating temp.
4) Can I use this valve on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The valve is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application product, so it is acceptable for commercial potable plumbing. It also meets ASTM F1970. Listed system uses are commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation.
5) Can I air-test a Chemtrol CPVC valve line before putting it in service?
No. Do not use or test this valve with compressed air or any other gas. Thermoplastic valves under gas pressure can fail energetically. Hydrostatic test with water only.
6) How does a 3-way 2-position diverter valve differ from a standard 2-way shutoff ball valve?
A diverter sends flow down one of two branches rather than simply opening or closing a single line. The S51D2-V is a 3-way, 2-position diverter: rotate the handle and flow switches from one outlet port to the other, which is what you want for duty/standby filters, alternating tanks, or bypassing a piece of equipment without breaking the line. If you only need isolation on a single run, a plain 2-way CPVC true union ball valve is the cheaper and simpler choice.
7) Is the FKM seat the right seal for my chemical line, or should I look at EPDM?
The S51D2-V uses an FKM fluoroelastomer seat and O-ring. FKM suits aggressive oxidizers, acids and hydrocarbon-bearing media, which is the usual reason it gets specified over EPDM on an industrial CPVC line. EPDM is the alternative where the media is a ketone or a strong caustic that attacks fluoroelastomer. Check your media against the Chemtrol chemical resistance data before committing.
8) How do I join the S51D2-V to my existing CPVC pipe?
Solvent weld. The end connections are S socket, so the pipe is cut square, deburred, primed and cemented into the socket with CPVC solvent cement. There is no threading and no gasketed joint to torque. Because it is a true union valve, the sockets are on the union end pieces, so the valve itself comes back out later without touching those glued joints.
9) Will this valve corrode or scale in an industrial water system?
The body is Corzan CPVC, light grey, with an orange handle. CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it is used in place of metal on treated water, chemical feed and irrigation lines. It is also light enough to handle and hang without the support metal valves need.
