Nibco MB975AA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco Chemtrol T51D2-V 3-way valve thread onto my existing Schedule 80 CPVC pipe, or do I have to solvent weld it?
Threaded, not solvent cemented. The T51D2-V has female NPT end connections on all three ports, so it mates to male NPT threaded pipe or fittings in Schedule 80 CPVC. That means it can be backed out of the line later without cutting pipe. If your system is already cemented socket CPVC, you will need male adapters at each of the three ports to land this valve.
2) Is a 3-way 2-position diverter valve the right choice for switching flow between two tanks, or do I need two separate ball valves?
A diverter is what you want if the job is sending one inlet to one of two outlets. The T51D2-V is a 3-way 2-position valve, so the handle picks path A or path B, one at a time, with no mixing position and no both-open position. Two separate two-way ball valves do the same job but need two operations and leave room for someone to open both at once. Where the sequence matters, such as switching between duty and standby filters or two chemical tanks, the single-handle diverter removes that error.
3) What pressure can a Chemtrol CPVC ball valve hold, and can I use it on compressed air?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, full port. Do not use or test this valve with compressed air or any other gas. That prohibition covers pressure testing too, so hydro test it, never air test it. CPVC pressure rating also falls off as temperature climbs, so the 150 psi number belongs to 73 degree F service.
4) Does the FKM seal on this Chemtrol valve suit my chemical, or should I be looking at EPDM?
The T51D2-V uses FKM fluoroelastomer seats and O-rings. FKM is the seal you pick for acids, hydrocarbons and oxidizers; EPDM is the one you pick for hot water, glycol and many caustics, and the two are close to opposites on some media. Note also the manufacturer's plastics incompatibility warning on POE, polyol ester lubricants attack the CPVC body itself regardless of which seal you specify. Check your media against both the CPVC body and the FKM seal before ordering.
5) Is the Nibco T51D2-V approved for potable water in a commercial building?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is listed as lead-free. It also meets ASTM F1970, the standard covering molded thermoplastic union and multiport valves. Those are the listings a plumbing inspector looks for on a commercial potable line. The valve is also used on industrial and irrigation systems.
6) What sizes does the Chemtrol T51D2-V CPVC diverter valve come in?
Six line sizes, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, all female NPT. Part numbers run MB975A6 for the 1/2 inch through MB975AD for the 2 inch. Above 2 inch you are out of this valve's range and into a different Chemtrol body.
7) Can I service the Chemtrol true union valve without cutting the piping out?
That is the point of the true union body. The union nuts back off and the valve and its internals lift out of the line for repair or replacement, with no change to the length of the connected pipe and nothing to cut or re-cement. On a threaded version the mating nipples stay put. For a 24/7 process line, this is the difference between a short isolation and a rebuild.
8) Why use CPVC instead of metal for a diverter valve in a corrosive process line?
Corzan CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and the valve is light enough to hang on the pipe without extra support that a bronze or ductile body of the same size would need. For chemical feed, treated water and wash-down service that is usually the deciding factor over metal. The trade-off is temperature and the hard rule against gas service. Body color is light grey with an orange handle, which is the visual cue crews use to tell the CPVC lines from PVC on a plant floor.
