1) Does the Nibco T51D2-E 3-way valve divert flow or shut it off?
It's a diverter. The T51D2-E is a 3-way, 2-position ball valve, so the handle sends flow down one of two outlet ports rather than simply opening and closing a single line. That makes it the right choice for things like switching between a duty and standby filter, a bypass leg, or two irrigation zones off one supply. If you just need isolation on a single run, a standard 2-way true union ball valve is the part to order instead.
2) What kind of pipe connection does this Chemtrol CPVC diverter valve have?
Female NPT threaded ports, sized to Schedule 80 CPVC. You thread it onto male-threaded pipe or transition adapters, no solvent cementing at the valve itself. If your run is being solvent welded throughout, you'd need the socket version rather than this threaded one.
3) Can I service this valve without cutting the piping out?
That's the point of the true union body. The end connectors stay threaded to the pipe while the valve and its working parts lift out for repair or replacement, so there's no cutting and no change in the installed run length. On a live plant where downtime costs money, that's the difference between a shutdown and a quick swap.
4) What pressure and temperature can this CPVC diverter valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 210 degrees F. Like all thermoplastic valves, the working pressure falls off as temperature climbs, so check the Chemtrol pressure/temperature derating before using it anywhere near the top of that range.
5) Can I use this valve on compressed air?
No. Nibco specifically states not to use or test this valve with compressed air or other gases. It's a liquid-service valve, and that includes hydrostatic testing, which must be done with water, not air.
6) Is the Nibco T51D2-E approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN-61, and it also meets ASTM F1970 for special engineered fittings. The valve is listed as lead-free, so it's usable on potable systems as well as industrial and irrigation service.
7) Will EPDM seals hold up to the chemicals in my system?
The seat and O-ring elastomer is EPDM, which suits water, glycol, many dilute acids and bases, and general plumbing service. EPDM is a poor match for petroleum oils and hydrocarbons, so if your line carries oil-based media you want the FKM/Viton version instead. Nibco also publishes a POE warning on plastics incompatibility, worth reading if refrigeration oils are anywhere in the loop.
8) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T51D2-E come in?

9) How is Corzan CPVC different from regular PVC for an industrial line?
Corzan CPVC carries a higher temperature ceiling than standard PVC, and this valve is rated to 210 degrees F for that reason. It won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it's light enough that large sizes can be handled and supported far more easily than metal. For hot corrosive service in a plant or a commercial mechanical room, that's what pushes a specifier from PVC to CPVC.
10) What does the valve look like installed, and how do I spot the diverter among other valves on the rack?
