1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Chemtrol S51D2-E 3-way diverter ball valve come in?
The S51D2-E diverter valve is offered in five socket sizes: 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Part numbers run MB986A8 for 3/4 inch, MB986AA for 1 inch, MB986AB for 1-1/4 inch, MB986AC for 1-1/2 inch and MB986AD for 2 inch.
2) How does the S51D2-E connect to CPVC pipe, and will it work with Schedule 80?
It is a solvent weld socket valve, sized to Schedule 80 CPVC pipe. The sockets take standard CPVC solvent cement, so no threading and no transition fittings. Because the body is Corzan CPVC and the ends are socket only, it is not a threaded or flanged valve; if the run is threaded you need adapters ahead of it.
3) What pressure and temperature can this CPVC diverter valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 210 degrees F. Note the pressure rating is stated at 73 degrees F, so a hot line will derate it. Do not use or test it with compressed air or other gases.
4) Can I service this valve without cutting the CPVC pipe?
That is the point of the true union design. The valve and its operating components lift out of the line for repair or replacement with no disruption and no length change to the connected piping, so the solvent welded socket ends stay in place. For a maintenance crew that matters more than anything else on the spec sheet.
5) Is the EPDM seal the right choice for my chemical, or should I look at a different seat material?
The S51D2-E is built with EPDM O-rings and EPDM seats. EPDM suits water, many dilute acids and bases, and general commercial or industrial service. It is the wrong elastomer for petroleum oils and hydrocarbon based fluids, which is where a different seal compound is called for. Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE (polyol ester) type fluids, worth reading before you commit the valve to a refrigeration or oil bearing line.
6) Is this Nibco CPVC valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and meets ASTM F1970. It is listed as a lead-free application valve and is used in commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation systems.
7) What does a 3-way 2-position diverter valve actually do in a piping system?
It sends flow down one of two branches from a single inlet, switching between them with one handle turn rather than opening and closing a pair of separate valves. Common uses are alternating between two filters, two tanks, or a process leg and a bypass leg. It is a two-position diverter, so it is meant to direct flow one way or the other, not to blend or throttle between the two ports.
