Nibco MB782AA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Chemtrol T51M3-V 3-way ball valve come in?
Six sizes, 1/2 inch through 2 inch: 1/2 (MB782A6), 3/4 (MB782A8), 1 (MB782AA), 1-1/4 (MB782AB), 1-1/2 (MB782AC) and 2 inch (MB782AD). All are Schedule 80 CPVC with female NPT threaded ends.
2) How does the T51M3-V connect to my piping - solvent weld or threaded?
Threaded only. The end connections are female NPT, so it mates to male-threaded Schedule 80 CPVC or other male NPT pipe nipples of the matching size. If your run is solvent-cemented CPVC you will need threaded adapters, or a socket-end version of the valve instead.
3) What pressure and temperature can this Chemtrol CPVC 3-way valve handle?
150 psi at 73F with water, non-shock, full port, and a maximum service temperature of 210F. Like all CPVC pressure ratings, capacity drops as temperature climbs, so a line running near 210F should not be sized against the 73F number.
4) Can I use this valve on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly that Chemtrol CPVC ball valves must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing - test with water. It is a liquid-service valve for commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation lines.
5) Is the T51M3-V approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and also meets ASTM F1970. It is listed as a lead-free application valve, which is what a potable water spec on a municipal or institutional job normally calls for.
6) Can I service this valve without cutting the pipe?
That is the point of the true union body. The valve and its working parts lift straight out of the line for repair or replacement, with no disruption and no change in the length of the connected piping. For an MRO crew that means a seal change without re-piping the run.
7) What does 3-way 3-position multi-port mean on this Chemtrol valve?
The ball is ported so one handle position feeds one outlet, another position feeds the other, and the third position gives you a further flow path - so a single body does diverting or selecting duty that would otherwise take two two-way valves and extra fittings. The orange handle indicates the setting.
8) What are the seals made of, and will they hold up to chemicals?
The O-rings and seat seals are FKM fluoroelastomer, the option normally specified for chemical and elevated-temperature process service rather than standard EPDM. Note the manufacturer's POE warning on plastics incompatibility: polyol ester oils and certain refrigeration fluids attack CPVC, so check your media against it.
9) Will this CPVC valve corrode in a wet or chemical environment the way a metal valve does?
No. The body is Corzan CPVC, which will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and the valve is light enough to handle and hang without the support a bronze or iron equivalent needs. Body color is light grey with an orange handle.
