1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Chemtrol T51M3-E 3-way ball valve come in?
The T51M3-E multi-port ball valve is offered in four sizes: 1/2 inch (MB784A6), 3/4 inch (MB784A8), 1 inch (MB784AA), and 1-1/2 inch (MB784AC). All are CPVC Schedule 80 with female NPT threaded ends, so they thread onto male NPT pipe or male adapters of the matching size.
2) Can I use this CPVC valve on a compressed air line?
No. The T51M3-E is for liquid service only, and Chemtrol states plainly not to use or test it with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic testing with water is the way to prove the line. If you need air service, specify a metal valve rated for gas.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Chemtrol T51M3-E handle?
150 psi non-shock at 73 degrees F on water, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 210 degrees F. As with all thermoplastic valves, the working pressure falls off as temperature climbs, so a line running near 210 F should not be sized against the 150 psi figure.
4) Can I service this valve without cutting the piping?
Yes, that is the point of the Chemtrol true union body. The union nuts back off and the valve and its working parts lift out of the line for repair or replacement, with no disruption and no change in the length of the connected piping. Threaded ends mean you can also break the joint at the connection itself.
5) Is this valve approved for potable water?
The T51M3-E is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and ASTM F1970, and is catalogued as lead-free, which is what a spec calls for on potable commercial plumbing. It is also used in industrial and irrigation service.
6) Can I solvent weld this valve into a CPVC line?
Not directly. The T51M3-E ships with female NPT threaded ends only, so it screws onto male threads. To drop it into a solvent welded run, install a CPVC male adapter on each leg and thread the valve on, using an appropriate thread sealant rather than overtightening the plastic.
7) How does a 3-way 3-position multi-port valve differ from using two separate ball valves?
The T51M3-E is a single body with three ports and three handle positions, so one quarter-turn diverts flow from one leg to another, or isolates. That replaces a pair of two-way valves plus the tee and nipples between them, which shortens the assembly and cuts two joints out of the system. If you only ever need straight on/off isolation, a standard two-way true union ball valve is the simpler buy.
8) Are the seals EPDM or Viton, and does that matter for my chemical?
This version uses EPDM O-rings and EPDM rubber seats. EPDM suits water, glycol and many dilute acids and bases but is not the right elastomer for petroleum oils or hydrocarbons. Nibco also publishes a POE warning on plastics incompatibility, worth reading if the media is a refrigeration oil or similar. For hydrocarbon service, specify the FKM/Viton seal version instead.
9) Will this CPVC valve rust or corrode in a wet mechanical room?
No. The body is Corzan CPVC, light grey, with an orange handle, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. It is also light enough to hang on plastic pipe without the support a metal valve of the same size would need.
