1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T45M3-E 3-way true union ball valve come in?
The T45M3-E is offered in six threaded sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Part numbers run MA784A6 (1/2"), MA784A8 (3/4"), MA784AA (1"), MA784AB (1-1/4"), MA784AC (1-1/2") and MA784AD (2").
2) How does the T45M3-E connect to my piping - solvent weld or threaded?
Threaded only. The T45M3-E has female NPT threaded end connections on all three ports, so it screws onto male-threaded Schedule 80 PVC nipples or adapters. If your run is plain pipe you'll need male adapters to land on it; there is no socket for solvent cement on this version.
3) What does 3-way 3-position multi-port actually do on this Chemtrol valve?
It's a diverter. The T45M3-E is a 3-way, 3-position multi-port ball valve, so a single handle turn sends flow to one outlet, the other outlet, or the third position - useful for switching between two filters, two tanks, or a bypass leg without plumbing a pair of 2-way valves and a tee. The handle is orange.
4) Can I service this valve without cutting the pipe out?
That's the point of the true union body. The valve and its operating components lift out of the line for repair or replacement with no disruption and no change in the length of the connected piping, so you back off the union nuts rather than cutting and re-threading. Worth knowing on a system you cannot drain for long.
5) What pressure and temperature can the T45M3-E handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. Pressure rating drops as temperature climbs, which is normal for PVC. It is a liquid-service valve only - do not use or test it with compressed air or other gases.
6) Is this PVC diverter valve approved for potable water?
The T45M3-E is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it also meets ASTM F1970. It is listed for lead-free applications, and typical uses are commercial plumbing, industrial process, and irrigation.
7) Will EPDM seals hold up in my chemical line?
The T45M3-E uses EPDM O-rings and EPDM seat seals, which suit water, many dilute acids and bases, and typical irrigation or process water. EPDM is the wrong choice for petroleum oils and many hydrocarbons - a valve with FKM/Viton seals is the alternative there. Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE and similar oils; check your fluid against it before you commit.
8) Why Schedule 80 PVC instead of metal for a corrosive line?
Schedule 80 PVC has excellent corrosion resistance and the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and the valve is light enough to hang without extra support brackets that a bronze or iron multiport of the same size would need. The body is dark grey.
