1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Chemtrol S45M3-E 3-way ball valve come in?
The S45M3-E multi-port true union ball valve is made in six socket sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Part numbers run MA783A6 (1/2"), MA783A8 (3/4"), MA783AA (1"), MA783AB (1-1/4"), MA783AC (1-1/2") and MA783AD (2"). All are Schedule 80 PVC with socket weld ends, so they solvent cement to Sch 80 PVC pipe of the matching size.
2) Can I use this PVC 3-way valve on a compressed air line?
No. The Chemtrol S45M3-E is a liquid service valve only, and the manufacturer specifically says not to use or test it with compressed air or other gases. It is rated 150 psi at 73F water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 140F. If your line carries air or gas, this is the wrong valve.
3) Do I have to cut the pipe to service a Chemtrol true union multi-port valve?
No, and that is the point of the true union body. The valve and its operating components lift out of the piping run for repair or replacement without disturbing the connected pipe and without any change in the laying length. For a maintenance crew, that means a seat or O-ring change is a shutdown and a wrench, not a re-pipe.
4) Can this valve be used on potable water?
The Chemtrol S45M3-E carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification and is listed as a lead-free application, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable line. It also meets ASTM F1970 for thermoplastic valves. Service limits still apply: 150 psi at 73F, 140F maximum.
5) Are these socket ends or threaded? Can I thread this onto my existing NPT nipple?
Socket only. The S45M3-E uses S socket weld ends, meaning solvent cemented PVC socket joints, not NPT threads. To tie into a threaded line you would need a PVC male or female adapter at each union tailpiece, or order a threaded-end version of the valve instead.
6) Is EPDM the right seal for my chemical feed line, or do I need Viton?
The S45M3-E ships with EPDM O-rings and EPDM seat seals. EPDM suits water, most dilute acids and bases, and general commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service. It is not the choice for petroleum oils or hydrocarbons. Nibco also flags a plastics incompatibility warning for POE (polyol ester) fluids, so check refrigerant oil service before specifying this valve.
7) What does a 3-way 3-position multi-port valve do that two shutoff valves won't?
A 3-way, 3-position multi-port ball valve gives you diverting or mixing at a single body: one handle selects between two outlet paths, or shuts the flow, instead of you plumbing and operating a pair of two-way valves. On the S45M3-E it is a full port ball design in Schedule 80 PVC, so the flow path stays the size of the pipe. If all you need is simple isolation on one run, a standard two-way true union ball valve is the cheaper and shorter fitting.
8) Will this PVC valve hold up in a corrosive industrial line?
Schedule 80 PVC is the body material here, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, with the highest long term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastic piping materials. The body is dark grey with an orange handle, which is the standard Chemtrol visual cue on a multi-port. Keep it under 140F and 150 psi and off gas service.
