1) Will the Nibco T-221-A bronze strainer thread onto my existing steel pipe, or do I need adapters?
Both ends are female NPT (FIPT) threads conforming to ANSI B1.20.1, so it threads directly onto any standard male NPT pipe nipple or fitting of matching size. No flanges, no soldering, no adapters. It's built in 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, and 2 inch pipe sizes.
2) Can I use a Nibco T-221-A strainer on a potable water line?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep the T-221-A on non-potable service: steam, condensate, hydronic heating and chilled water, compressed air, and process lines. If the line feeds fixtures people drink from, you need a lead-free strainer instead.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco T-221-A handle on a steam line?
Rated 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam up to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C), and 200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure. That's a Class 125 body, so it suits low pressure steam and standard hydronic work. Higher pressure steam mains need a Class 250 or cast steel strainer.
4) How do I clean out a Y strainer without draining the system?
The T-221-A has a tapped cap with a blow-off plug. Pull the plug and blow down the screen while the line stays under pressure, which is how most MRO crews service these on a schedule. For a full clean you back the cap out and lift the 20-mesh stainless screen out of the branch pocket. Leave clearance below the branch for cap removal when you set the strainer in the line.
5) Which way does a Y strainer get installed, and does orientation matter?
Orientation matters. The T-221-A is a Y pattern with the branch angled off the flow path, and that branch holds the screen and the debris. On horizontal pipe the branch points down or to the side so solids collect in the pocket. Pointed up, debris falls back into the line every time flow drops. Install it with flow following the body arrow so the screen is loaded from inside out.
6) How fine is the screen in the Nibco T-221-A, and will it protect a pump seal or control valve?
The screen is 20-mesh stainless steel wire. That catches scale, weld slag, pipe chips, and grit ahead of pump seals, control valves, and coils, which is the usual reason a Y strainer goes in. It is a coarse-to-medium mesh, not a filter, so it won't remove fine sediment or rust bloom.
7) Is bronze the right strainer body for a building with aggressive or high-chloride water?
The T-221-A body is bronze and dezincification resistant, so it holds up in water chemistries that strip zinc out of ordinary brass and leave the fitting porous. That's the common failure mode in older hydronic and cooling loops with high chloride or low pH make-up water. For chemical service, check the fluid against the NIBCO chemical resistance data before committing.
8) Can I standardize on one strainer part number across a property's mechanical rooms?
Within the 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, and 2 inch threaded range, yes. The T-221-A carries the same bronze body, same 20-mesh stainless screen, and same tapped cap with blow-off plug at every size, so one service procedure and one spare screen habit covers all three. Order by size: 3/4 inch is MPN NL2QA08, 1-1/2 inch is NL2QA0C, and 2 inch is NL2QA0D. The one hard limit on standardizing is potable water, where this strainer cannot be used.
