1) Will the Nibco F-721-A Y-strainer bolt to my Class 125 cast iron flanges?
Yes. The F-721-A comes with Class 125 flanged end connections conforming to ANSI B16.1, so it bolts straight to any standard Class 125 cast iron flange with a matching bolt circle. No threading or welding at the connection.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco F-721-A cast iron Y-strainer come in?
Two sizes, 4 inch and 6 inch. The 4 inch is MPN NHT000H and the 6 inch is NHT000K. Both are the same cast iron body with flanged Class 125 ends, so the only decision is matching your line size.
3) Can I use the Nibco F-721-A strainer on a steam line?
Yes, up to 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam at 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). On cold water or other non-shock cold service the rating is 200 psi (13.8 bar). Anything above those numbers needs a higher class strainer, not this one.
4) How do you clean a Nibco F-721-A Y-strainer without pulling it out of the line?
Two ways. The cap is tapped with a plug, so you can pipe a blow-off valve to it and flush the screen under pressure without breaking any flanges. For a full clean, the bonnet is bolted, so you isolate the line, unbolt the bonnet, and lift the 20 mesh stainless screen out. The body stays flanged in place either way.
5) Does a Y-strainer have to be installed in a particular orientation?
Orientation matters on a Y pattern. The F-721-A has its branch angled off the flow path, and that branch (the screen pocket and blow-off plug) must point downward on a horizontal line so debris collects in it and drains out when you flush. Mounted with the pocket up, the debris falls back into the line every time you open it. Leave clearance below the pocket to pull the screen.
6) How fine is the screen in the Nibco F-721-A, and will it catch scale and weld slag?
The screen is 20 mesh, in either wire or perforated stainless steel. That catches pipe scale, weld slag, and construction debris ahead of a pump, control valve, or meter. It is a strainer screen, not a filter, so it won't hold back fine silt or sediment.
7) Y-strainer or basket strainer for a 6 inch chilled water line?
A Y pattern like the F-721-A is the compact choice and it works in any orientation as long as the pocket drains, which suits tight mechanical rooms and steam service to 353 degrees F. A basket strainer holds more dirt and is easier to service on a heavily fouled horizontal line, but it takes more headroom and is horizontal-only. For a clean closed loop with periodic blow-down through the tapped plug, the Y is the usual pick.
8) Do I need to order gaskets and bolts with the Nibco F-721-A flanged strainer?
Plan on it. The F-721-A ships as the strainer body with its Class 125 flanged ends and the stainless screen already inside; flange gaskets and the bolt sets that join it to your mating flanges are a separate line item, sized to the 4 inch or 6 inch flange you're landing on. If you want to blow the strainer down in service, you'll also want a valve and nipple for the tapped cap plug.
