Nibco NLT1006 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-751-A Y-strainer come in, and how does it connect to the piping?
The T-751-A is offered in 1/2 inch and 2 inch. Both connect with female NPT threaded ends (FIPT), Class 250 threaded, conforming to ANSI B1.20.1. So you thread it onto male pipe nipples, no flanges or welding. Order codes are NLT1006 for the 1/2 inch and NLT100D for the 2 inch.
2) Can I use this Nibco iron Y-strainer on a steam line?
Yes. The T-751-A is rated 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C), and 200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure. That covers typical low pressure commercial steam heating service as well as cold water and general mechanical piping.
3) Can the screen be cleaned without cutting the strainer out of the line?
Yes. The body is a Y pattern with a tapped screw-in bonnet and a blow-off plug, so you can pull the cap to remove and clean the screen in place, or pipe the tapped plug port to a blow-down valve and flush it without opening the line. Leave clearance below the branch for the cap to come off.
4) How fine is the screen in the T-751-A, and what does it actually catch?
It uses a 20-mesh stainless steel wire screen, which traps scale, weld slag, pipe chips and coarse sediment ahead of pumps, control valves and coils. That is a general protection mesh, not a fine filtration element, so if you are protecting something needing finer particle removal you want a dedicated filter downstream.
5) Does the T-751-A have to be installed a particular way around?
It is a Y pattern strainer, so the branch angles off the flow path and must point downward or horizontally on a horizontal run so debris collects in the pocket rather than falling back into the line. Flow direction follows the body casting, and the threaded female ends make either orientation straightforward to pipe.
6) What is the body made of on the Nibco T-751-A strainer?
Cast iron body with a stainless steel wire screen, and the strainer is dezincification resistant. Cast iron suits commercial HVAC hydronic and steam service; for potable water service you would look at a bronze or stainless body instead.
7) Do I need a separate shutoff to service a Y-strainer like this one?
The T-751-A is a strainer only, not a valve, so it does not isolate flow. Plan isolation valves on each side if you want to pull the screen without draining the system. The tapped cap and blow-off plug let you flush the pocket between cleanings with the line still up.
