1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Chemtrol W45BF-E-NO PVC butterfly valve come in?
Two sizes: 4 inch (MPN MA376AH) and 6 inch (MPN MA376AK). Pressure rating differs between them, 150 psi at 73F water non-shock on the 4 inch and 115 psi at the same temperature on the 6 inch, so size the system to the smaller number if you are mixing both on one line.
2) Will a wafer style PVC butterfly valve bolt up to my ANSI 150 flanges?
Yes. The W45BF-E-NO is a wafer body that sandwiches between two flanges, and the flanged end connections are compatible with ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt patterns. You supply the flanges, bolts and gaskets; the wafer itself has no threads or sockets.
3) Can I use this butterfly valve as an isolation valve at the end of a line?
No. Nibco states this valve cannot be used as an isolation valve, and as a wafer body it needs pipe and flanges on both faces to retain the liner. For dead-end service or equipment isolation where you need to break the downstream piping, use a lug body or a true union ball valve instead.
4) Can I pressure test this PVC butterfly valve with compressed air?
No. Nibco explicitly says do not use or test this valve with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test with water only. Thermoplastic valves fail energetically under gas pressure, which is why the restriction is on the valve and not just a recommendation.
5) Is this valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is listed as Lead-Free, so it is certified for potable water system use. It also meets ASTM F1970. Applications named for it are commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
6) What is the maximum temperature for the Chemtrol PVC Schedule 80 butterfly valve?
140F maximum service temperature. PVC loses pressure capacity as it warms, so the 150 psi (4 inch) and 115 psi (6 inch) figures are stated at 73F water. Hot water or steam service is out; for anything above 140F you need a different material.
7) Is the EPDM seat the right choice, or should I be looking at Viton?
EPDM is used for both the O-rings and the boot here, which suits water, most dilute acids and bases, and general commercial or industrial water service. EPDM is not the seat for petroleum oils or hydrocarbons. Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE oils, worth reading before putting this on a refrigeration-adjacent system.
8) Does the W45BF-E-NO come with a handle, or do I order the operator separately?
Chemtrol Model B butterfly valves are offered bare stem, with a lever handle, or with a gear operator. On a 6 inch line a gear operator is the usual call because the disc torque against flow gets heavy for a lever; a 4 inch is commonly handled with a lever. Confirm which operator configuration you are selecting when you order.
