The disc and stem sheath are molded over a 316 stainless steel hex shaft to make a one-piece assembly. With this unique dry shaft seal, liquid never contacts the shaft, even at maximum pressure. 1) Can the Nibco W45BF-V-GO PVC butterfly valve be used as a shutoff or isolation valve?
No. The W45BF-V-GO is a wafer style PVC butterfly valve that cannot be used as an isolation valve. If you need to isolate a line section for service or dead-end service, specify a lug style or true union valve instead. Use this one for throttling and flow control in the run.
2) What pipe sizes does the W45BF-V-GO butterfly valve come in, and does the pressure rating change between them?
Two sizes: 4 inch (MPN MA385AH) and 6 inch (MPN MA385AK). Pressure rating is not the same. The 4 inch is rated 150 psi at 73 F water non-shock, the 6 inch drops to 115 psi at 73 F. Size your system pressure to the valve you are actually ordering.
3) Will this PVC butterfly valve bolt to my existing Class 150 flanges?
Yes. The flanged end connections are compatible with ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt patterns, and it is a wafer body, so it sandwiches between two mating flanges with through bolts. You supply the bolts, nuts and any gaskets required by your piping spec.
4) Can I use this valve on a compressed air line?
No. Do not use or test the valve with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing, which is where most people get caught out. Hydrostatic test only. It is built for liquid service in commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation systems.
5) Is this butterfly valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification, and is classified lead-free. Those are the listings a water utility or inspector looks for on potable service. ASTM F1970 is also referenced for the valve.
6) What is the maximum temperature for a Chemtrol PVC Schedule 80 butterfly valve?
140 F maximum service temperature. Note that PVC pressure ratings fall off as temperature rises, so the published 150 psi (4 inch) and 115 psi (6 inch) figures are at 73 F water. For hot water or steam service, PVC is the wrong material.
7) Is the FKM seat the right choice, or should I get EPDM?
The W45BF-V-GO uses FKM fluoroelastomer for both the O-rings and the boot. FKM is the chemical-resistance choice for aggressive media and oils, where EPDM is the general water and dilute-chemical option. One warning that applies regardless of elastomer: polyol ester lubricants are incompatible with plastic piping, and Nibco publishes a POE plastics incompatibility warning for that reason.
8) Does the W45BF-V-GO come with a handle, or do I order the operator separately?
The W45 series is offered as bare stem, with a lever handle, or with a gear operator. The GO designation on this model is the gear operator version, which is the usual pick at 6 inch where lever torque gets high. Confirm the operator style matches the actuation you need before the valve goes in the line.
9) Will the stem leak or seize over time on this PVC butterfly valve?
The disc and stem sheath are molded over a 316 stainless steel hex shaft as a one-piece assembly, and the dry shaft seal keeps liquid off the shaft even at maximum pressure. Vulcanized bushings and double O-ring seals handle the sealing. For a maintenance crew that means no packing to adjust and nothing to rust, scale, pit or corrode.
10) What color is the valve body, and is it PVC or CPVC?
Dark grey PVC, Schedule 80. Grey is the standard PVC Schedule 80 body color; CPVC is typically tan or light grey, so if your existing run is tan CPVC this is not a material match for the system even though the flange connection will bolt up.
