Nibco MB385AF – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco Chemtrol W51BF CPVC butterfly valve as an isolation valve?
No. The W51BF Model B wafer butterfly valve is not suitable for isolation service, per Nibco's own guidance. If you need to isolate a line to work downstream, specify a valve rated for isolation duty instead, such as a CPVC Schedule 80 true union ball valve. The W51BF is intended for throttling and flow control in the run.
2) Is the FKM seat the right choice, or should I order EPDM?
The W51BF-V carries FKM fluoroelastomer O-rings and boot. FKM is the selection for aggressive oxidizers and many hydrocarbons and acids where EPDM breaks down. If the line is water, dilute caustic, or similar general service, an EPDM-seated version of the same Model B valve is the usual pick. Match the elastomer to the chemical, not to the pipe.
3) Should I order the bare stem, lever-lock, or gear operator version of the 3 inch Chemtrol butterfly valve?
All three are orderable in 3 inch: lever-lock (MB365AF), bare stem (MB375AF), and gear operator (MB385AF). Lever-lock gives you a hand quarter-turn with position locking, which is what most 3 inch plumbing and irrigation installs use. Bare stem is for mounting your own actuator, electric or pneumatic, or a chainwheel. The gear operator adds a handwheel with mechanical advantage for higher differential pressure or where a lever is awkward overhead.
4) Is this valve approved for potable water?
The W51BF is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN-61, and it is listed as a lead-free application product, which is what a potable water system inspection looks for. It also meets ASTM F1970. System uses on record include commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation.
5) Can I pressure test this CPVC butterfly valve with compressed air?
No, and this one matters. Do not use or test the valve with compressed air or any other gas. Thermoplastic valves fail without warning under stored gas energy. Hydrostatic test with water only.
6) What is the pressure and temperature rating on the Chemtrol Corzan CPVC butterfly valve?
150 psi at 73 degrees F, water, non-shock, with a maximum service temperature of 210 degrees F. Like all thermoplastic valves, the working pressure falls as temperature climbs, so the 150 psi figure only applies at 73 degrees F. Hot process lines running near 210 degrees F must be derated using Chemtrol's published curves.
7) Will this match the light grey CPVC piping already in my plant?
The valve body is light grey, which is the standard Corzan CPVC color, so it blends with existing Schedule 80 CPVC runs. For facilities standardizing a system, note that the 3 inch size is offered with three different operators sharing the same body and FKM trim, so you can mix lever and geared units on one line without changing the elastomer package.
