Sta-Kon R500-PS-V – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size conductor does the Sta-Kon R500-PS-V parallel splice take?
The R500-PS-V is sized for 500 MCM conductor. It is a parallel splice, so both conductors enter the same side and run alongside each other rather than butting end to end. Both legs must be 500 MCM copper for the crimp to form correctly.
2) Is the Sta-Kon R500-PS-V insulated, or does it need to be taped or sleeved after crimping?
It is a non-insulated barrel, bare metallic copper. Once crimped you have to insulate the splice yourself, with heat shrink, tape, or an insulating boot, to get back to the 600 V rating of the conductor insulation. Plan that step into the job, especially inside a panel or pull box where the splice can be touched.
3) Can I splice aluminum conductor with the Sta-Kon R500-PS-V?
No. The barrel is copper and the splice is specified for copper conductor only. Aluminum feeders need an AL or AL9CU rated connector; putting aluminum into a copper-only barrel risks a dissimilar-metal connection that loosens and heats over time.
4) Can I use a 500 MCM parallel splice on a 480 V feeder?
Yes. The R500-PS-V carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277/480, and any other common building distribution voltage up to 600 V.
5) What is the difference between a parallel splice and a butt splice for 500 MCM cable?
A parallel splice like the R500-PS-V takes both conductors in from the same end, laid side by side, so it is what you use for a tap or where both cables come from the same direction and you have length to double back. A butt splice joins two conductors end to end from opposite ends of the barrel and is what you want for a straight inline run repair. They are not interchangeable, so pick by which way your cable approaches the splice point.
6) Does the Sta-Kon R500-PS-V crimp with a hand tool?
At 500 MCM you are into hydraulic crimping territory, not hand pliers. The barrel wall on a 500 MCM splice requires a hydraulic or battery hydraulic crimper with the correct die set for the connector. No tooling or dies ship with the splice itself.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon R500-PS-V made?
Country of origin is Mexico. Useful if you are filling out origin documentation on a government or institutional purchase order.
