Sta-Kon E6-PS-D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon E6-PS-D parallel splice take?
The E6-PS-D is a 6 AWG parallel splice, rated for conductors up to 20,800 circular mil area. Both conductors enter the same side and run parallel, so it is for tapping or extending two like-size 6 AWG copper conductors, not for a butt (end to end) joint.
2) Is the E6-PS-D splice insulated, and do I have to tape or heat-shrink it?
It is a non-insulated barrel, bare copper with a metallic finish. Nothing on the splice provides dielectric cover, so the joint has to be insulated after crimping with tape, heat shrink, or a cold-shrink sleeve sized for 6 AWG. If you want the insulation built in, use an insulated parallel splice instead.
3) Can I use this Sta-Kon splice on 480V motor feeder conductors?
Yes. The E6-PS-D carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277/480 and 600 V building and motor circuits once the splice is properly insulated after crimping.
4) Will this splice work on aluminum conductors?
No. The E6-PS-D barrel is copper and is intended for copper conductors. Aluminum needs an AL9CU rated connector with the appropriate inhibitor compound; putting bare aluminum into a copper-only barrel risks galvanic corrosion at the joint.
5) Is the Sta-Kon E6-PS-D UL listed for inspected work?
It is covered under UL file E9809. Inspectors on commercial and institutional jobs generally want the UL reference plus a crimp made with the tool and die the manufacturer specifies for the connector.
6) Parallel splice or butt splice for a 6 AWG tap in a junction box?
Use a parallel splice like the E6-PS-D when both conductors come from the same direction, as with a tap off a run or doubling back a loop in a box. A butt splice is for conductors meeting end to end in line. The parallel barrel keeps the two 6 AWG conductors side by side, which is usually the shorter, easier dress inside a box.
7) Do I need a crimp tool for the E6-PS-D, or can I use pliers?
A compression crimp is required. This is a bare copper 6 AWG barrel, so it needs a proper hand or hydraulic crimper with the matching die for a 6 AWG splice. Pliers or a hammer-type blow do not produce a UL-recognized crimp and the joint will heat up under load. No tool, dies, or insulation are supplied with the splice.
8) What is the country of origin on the Sta-Kon E6-PS-D splice?
Manufactured in Mexico. Procurement buyers tracking origin for contract or domestic-preference reporting should note that on the submittal.
