Sta-Kon D8-PS-D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon D8-PS-D parallel splice take?
The D8-PS-D is an 8 AWG parallel splice, rated for conductors up to 13,100 circular mil area with a 2-conductor capacity. Both conductors enter from the same side and run parallel, so it is used to tap or extend two like-size 8 AWG copper conductors rather than butt two ends together.
2) Is the D8-PS-D splice insulated, or do I have to tape or heat-shrink it?
It's a non-insulated barrel, bare copper with a metallic finish. You supply the insulation after crimping, normally heat shrink tubing or tape rated for the circuit, so the finished splice meets the 600 V rating of the connector itself.
3) Can I use this splice on a 480 V motor feeder?
Yes. The D8-PS-D carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277 and 480 V building and motor circuits once the splice is insulated to the same rating. It is UL recognized under file E9809.
4) Will a parallel splice work where I need to join two wire ends end to end?
No. A parallel splice holds both conductors side by side entering the same end of the barrel, which suits a tap or a pigtail off a run. For joining two conductor ends coming from opposite directions you want a butt splice instead. Picking the wrong body style leaves one conductor with nowhere to seat.
5) Is the D8-PS-D copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductors?
The barrel is copper, so it is intended for copper conductors. Aluminum conductors need an AL or AL9CU rated connector with the appropriate inhibitor compound; this one is not that.
6) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Sta-Kon D8-PS-D?
It's a crimp-only connector, no solder and no set screws. Non-insulated 8 AWG barrels take a hand or hydraulic crimper with the correct die for the barrel size; pliers or a general purpose insulated-terminal tool will not produce a compliant crimp.
7) What is the Sta-Kon part number and where is it made?
Order by manufacturer part number D8-PS-D. The splice is manufactured in Mexico.
