Sta-Kon C70M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon C70M ring terminal take?
The C70M is sized for 12-10 AWG stranded copper wire. Going smaller than 10 AWG in this barrel leaves the conductor loose in the crimp, and 8 AWG will not enter it, so match the terminal to the actual conductor you are landing, not to the breaker size.
2) Is the Sta-Kon C70M insulated, and does that mean I need to add anything?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no nylon or vinyl sleeve. On any application where the barrel could be touched or could flash to an adjacent terminal, plan on heat shrink or a snap-on insulating sleeve over the crimp. Where the terminal lands inside an enclosure on a stud block with adequate spacing, bare is standard practice.
3) Is this ring terminal UL recognized for panel and control work?
Yes. The C70M carries UL file E9809, which is the reference an inspector or a panel shop QC file wants to see for terminations in listed assemblies.
4) Can I use the C70M on aluminum conductors?
No. It is a copper terminal and should be used on copper conductors only. Aluminum needs a terminal rated AL or AL/CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound, otherwise you get galvanic corrosion at the crimp.
5) Why pick a ring terminal over a fork or spade on a motor or equipment stud?
A ring is a closed barrel, so it cannot back off a stud if the nut loosens. A fork or spade can slip out from under a partly loose screw. On vibrating equipment, motor terminal boxes and battery or bus studs, the closed 5/16 ring on the C70M is the one to use. Forks are for fast landing on captive screw terminals where you want to drop the lug in without removing the screw.
6) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon C70M?
It is a non-insulated barrel in the 12-10 AWG range, so use the non-insulated die set on a ratcheting crimp tool, not the colored insulated nests. The color-coded insulated dies compress to a different profile and will not form the barrel correctly. A standard 12-10 non-insulated die gives the correct indent.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon C70M made? We have a domestic sourcing requirement.
Country of origin is the United States, which is the answer most government, institutional and utility procurement files need for this class of electrical hardware.
