Sta-Kon A484SP – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon A484SP terminal crimp onto?
The A484SP is sized for 22 to 18 AWG stranded copper conductor. Anything heavier than 18 AWG will not seat in the barrel, and anything lighter than 22 will not get a reliable crimp, so for 16 AWG and up you need a different barrel size in the Sta-Kon range.
2) Is the Sta-Kon A484SP insulated, and do I need to sleeve it after crimping?
It's a non-insulated terminal, so the barrel is bare metal after crimping. If the termination sits in a panel or box where adjacent terminals or a grounded surface could be contacted, you add heat shrink or a nylon sleeve yourself. If you want the insulation built in, choose an insulated ring terminal in the same 22-18 AWG range instead.
3) What is the tongue shape on the A484SP, and will it work on a stud I can't lift the wire off of?
It's a rectangular tongue ring terminal, meaning the tongue is closed around the stud rather than slotted. A closed ring will not slide on or off a stud with the nut in place, so the nut has to come fully off to install it. Where you need to drop the wire off without removing hardware, use a fork or spade tongue instead.
4) Is the Sta-Kon A484SP copper, and what is the silver plating for?
The body is copper with a silver-plated finish. Silver plating keeps contact resistance low and is used where the termination carries signal or sees elevated temperature, as opposed to the tin plating found on general-purpose terminals.
5) Where is the Sta-Kon A484SP terminal made? I have a domestic sourcing requirement.
Country of origin is the United States, which covers Buy American style sourcing language on government, healthcare, and institutional work. The part number to put on the submittal is Sta-Kon A484SP.
6) How many versions of the Sta-Kon A484SP are there, and is there anything else to specify when ordering?
One configuration only: model A484SP, the non-insulated silver-plated rectangular tongue terminal for 22-18 AWG. There is no finish, color, or gauge option to pick, so the only thing left to confirm on your end is the stud size you are landing on and the crimp die for the 22-18 barrel.
