Sta-Kon J973U – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon J973U ring terminal take?
The J973U is sized for 1/0 through 2/0 AWG conductor. It is a tubular barrel lug, so the stripped conductor seats fully into the barrel before crimping. If your feeder is 1 AWG or 3/0, this is the wrong barrel size and you need a different lug in the series.
2) What stud or bolt size does this 90 degree ring lug fit?
The ring tongue is drilled for a 3/8 inch stud, which covers most panel board lugs, bus bars and battery studs in that range. The tongue sits at a 90 degree bend off the barrel, so it is intended where the cable runs parallel to the panel and the termination turns into the stud.
3) Will this lug work on aluminum conductor?
No. The J973U barrel is copper and is intended for copper conductor. For aluminum or dual rated runs you need a lug specifically marked AL9CU or AL7CU with the matching compound. Putting bare copper directly on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the termination.
4) Why choose a 90 degree ring terminal instead of a straight lug?
A straight lug wants the cable to approach the stud in line with it, which forces a sweeping bend in heavy 1/0 to 2/0 cable and can crowd the enclosure. The 90 degree tongue on the J973U turns the connection at the stud itself, so the cable can run flat along the back of the panel or down a gutter. Where you have bending space and the stud faces the cable run, a straight tongue lug is simpler.
5) Is this terminal insulated, and does it need anything over it after crimping?
It is a non-insulated copper barrel, bare metal with no sleeve. Where the installation requires the barrel and tongue covered, you add heat shrink or tape yourself. The bare construction is also what lets you inspect the crimp and use it in high temperature or tight lug stack conditions where an insulating sleeve would be in the way.
6) Can I use the Sta-Kon J973U on a 480 volt feeder?
Yes. The lug carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277/480 and other common building distribution voltages. It is UL recognized under file E9809.
7) Do I need a special crimp tool for this 1/0 to 2/0 tubular lug?
Yes, a heavy conductor lug like this is not a hand pliers crimp. Barrels in the 1/0 to 2/0 range are compressed with a hydraulic or ratcheting compression tool using the die index stamped on the barrel, typically two crimps on a barrel of this length. A mis-crimped heavy lug heats under load, so the die has to match the barrel.
8) What do I order it by, and does it come as a single lug?
Order it by manufacturer part number J973U, Sta-Kon brand. It is a single terminal part number, so count one lug per conductor termination and add for spares. Country of origin is Mexico.
