1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon K972U ring terminal take?
The K972U is built for 2/0 through 3/0 AWG conductor. It is a tubular barrel lug, so the stranded conductor goes straight into the barrel and gets crimped. Anything smaller than 2/0 will float in the barrel and won't give you a sound crimp, and 4/0 won't enter it.
2) Why would I use a 90 degree ring terminal instead of a straight lug?
The 90 degree bend on the K972U turns the tongue perpendicular to the barrel, so the cable runs parallel to the panel or equipment face while the ring lands flat on the stud. Electricians use that in tight gutters, panelboards and battery boxes where a straight lug would force a sharp bend radius in a 2/0 or 3/0 conductor. If you have room to bring the cable in straight at the stud, a standard flag-free straight ring is simpler.
3) Is the Sta-Kon K972U insulated?
No. It is a bare, non-insulated copper tubular lug. You supply your own covering, normally adhesive-lined heat shrink over the barrel after crimping, or a slip-on boot where the installation calls for one.
4) Can I use the K972U on aluminum conductor?
It is a copper lug, so use it on copper conductor. Aluminum feeders need a lug rated AL/CU with the appropriate oxide inhibitor, which is a different part.
5) Is the K972U crimped or set with a bolt?
Crimped. The tubular barrel is compressed onto the conductor with a hydraulic or battery crimper and the die matched to 2/0 to 3/0 copper. There is no set screw on this lug, so if you need a mechanical termination you can land and re-land by hand, you want a set-screw mechanical lug rather than this one.
