Sta-Kon E71U – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What voltage is the E71U terminal rated for, and can I use it on a 480 V motor feeder?
The terminal carries a 600 V rating, so 480 V three phase and 277/480 V circuits are within rating. It is also UL listed under file E9809. Anything above 600 V needs a medium voltage lug, not this terminal.
2) Why would I use a 90 degree ring terminal instead of a straight one?
The E71U has a 90 degree bend between the barrel and the ring tongue, so the wire runs in perpendicular to the stud face. That is what you want in a tight panel, a motor connection box, or a bus stud where a flat straight terminal would force a sharp bend in a stiff 6 AWG conductor. If the wire approaches the stud in line with the stud face, use a straight ring tongue instead.
3) Is the Sta-Kon E71U insulated, and does that matter for my application?
It is non-insulated bare copper, metallic finish, with no sleeve over the barrel. That means you supply the insulation yourself if the terminal sits where it could be touched or could fault to an adjacent part, typically heat shrink or tape over the barrel. On a stud inside an enclosed box with proper clearances, bare is normal practice.
4) Is the Sta-Kon E71U rated for aluminum conductors?
No. The body is copper and the terminal is sized for 6 AWG copper conductor. Aluminum needs an AL or AL9CU dual rated lug with the appropriate inhibitor compound, not a bare copper terminal.
5) Can I crimp the Sta-Kon E71U with standard hand tools or do I need a bigger crimper?
At 6 AWG this is past the range of plier style terminal tools for small insulated lugs. A non-insulated copper barrel in that size needs a proper crimper with the correct 6 AWG die, hand hydraulic or a long handle ratchet frame. Under-crimping a bare 6 AWG barrel is the usual cause of a hot connection.
6) Is the Sta-Kon E71U made in the USA? We have domestic sourcing requirements.
Country of origin on the E71U is the United States, which is usually what a government or institutional buyer needs on record for domestic preference documentation.
