1) Does the Nortek Control indoor keypad need a separate card reader, or does it work on codes alone?
Codes alone. The Nortek Control indoor flush-mount keypad is a keypad-only reader, so users enter a PIN at the door and there is no card or fob credential involved. If you need badge credentials on the opening, you need a different reader type.
2) How many people can I program into the Nortek 120-user keypad before I run out of codes?
120 users. Each one gets a code, which covers a small office, a single-tenant amenity room, or a mid-size apartment common door. If you are managing a tenant roster that turns over past that count, plan on a networked access control panel rather than a standalone keypad.
3) Will this Nortek keypad fit a standard single-gang electrical box?
Yes. It is built as a single-gang, flush-mount unit, so it drops into a standard single-gang back box in the wall next to the door rather than surface mounting on the frame or a mullion.
4) Can I mount this Nortek flush-mount keypad outside on an exterior gate or door?
No. This is an indoor keypad. For a gate, a loading dock, or any opening exposed to weather, choose a reader rated for outdoor use instead.
5) How many relays does the Nortek 120-user keypad have, and what can I run off them?
Four relay outputs: one SPDT rated 2 amps and three SPDT rated 1 amp. The 2 amp relay is the one to use for the lock output (strike or mag lock), with the three 1 amp relays left for auxiliary duties such as an alarm shunt, an aux device, or signaling another panel.
6) Does this keypad support door position monitoring, or do I need a separate alarm panel for door ajar and forced entry?
It handles those itself. The keypad carries door position monitoring with door ajar and forced door outputs, plus an alarm shunt output. Wire a door position switch to it and the keypad reports a door held open too long or opened without a valid code, and the shunt output keeps the building alarm from tripping during a legitimate entry.
7) Do I need to buy a door position switch separately for the Nortek keypad's door ajar function?
Yes. The keypad provides the door position monitoring inputs and the door ajar, forced door, and alarm shunt outputs, but the contact itself is a separate item. Add a recessed or surface door contact, plus the electric strike or mag lock, to complete the opening.
8) Can I use this keypad on a mag lock, or is it strike only?
Either works. The 2 amp SPDT lock relay is a dry contact, so it can switch a fail-secure electric strike or a fail-safe mag lock depending on how you wire the common and normally open or normally closed side. Size the lock power supply to the lock, not to the keypad relay, and keep the lock current under the 2 amp relay rating.
