1) What pipe size does the Oatey 11898 No-Calk roof flashing fit?
The Oatey 11898 is sized for 1 inch vent pipe. The flashing slides down over the pipe and the sealing collar grips the pipe wall, so the pipe diameter has to match - a 1-1/2 or 2 inch stack needs a different size base.
2) What roof pitch will this Oatey thermoplastic vent pipe flashing work on?
Pitches up to 45 degrees. The 11898 base is formed to lay flat on anything from a near-flat shingle roof up to a 12/12, so it covers most residential and light commercial slopes without a specialty pitched base.
3) Can I use this flashing on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The Oatey 11898 thermoplastic base is specifically not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs - the hot asphalt and the plastic base don't go together. For a BUR or mod-bit assembly you want a metal base flashing instead.
4) Is the Oatey 11898 rated for a gas vent or a B-vent application?
It is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and approved for Type B installations, which is what lets it be used over B-vent rather than only cold DWV piping.
5) How big is the base on the Oatey 11898 flashing, and will it tuck under my shingle courses?
The base measures 9.25 x 13 inches. That footprint is sized so the lower flange lays over the course below and the upper portion slips under the next course of shingles in the normal shingle-weave install, with the long dimension running up-slope.
6) Can I paint the flashing collar to match the roof color?
Don't. Paint and petroleum based products should not be used on the plastic base or the rubber collar - they attack the material and shorten the life of the seal. The base is already black thermoplastic with a non-fading collar, so it blends on most roofs as-is.
7) Do I need to caulk the Oatey No-Calk flashing after installing it?
No sealant at the pipe is required - that's the point of the No-Calk design. The collar seals against the pipe mechanically as the base slides down, so you're not depending on a bead of caulk that fails in a few seasons.
8) For a rental property roof, will this plastic flashing crack or fade like the old ones?
The 11898 uses a rigid thermoplastic base described as non-fading and non-cracking, with a non-fading sealing collar. The common failure on older boots is a UV-degraded rubber collar, which is the part this design addresses. Keep petroleum products and paint off it and don't install it on a hot-mopped roof.
