OATEY 12920 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What roof pitch can this No-Calk aluminum flashing be used on?
The stamped aluminum base covers pitches from 0 to 40 degrees, which is flat up to a 10/12 roof. Above that pitch it is the wrong base. It is also not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs, so on a tar-and-gravel or torch-down assembly you need a flashing made for that system.
2) Can this flashing be used over a Type B gas vent?
Yes. The No-Calk collar is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and is approved for Type B installations, so it can go over a Type B vent as well as plumbing DWV stacks in the 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch range.
3) Do I need to caulk or seal the collar on the Oatey No-Calk flashing?
No caulk at the collar. It is self-sealing and grips the pipe as it slides down, which is the point of the No-Calk design. Two things to avoid: don't use petroleum-based products on the collar, and don't paint it. Paint and petroleum attack the rubber. The collar is color-stable on its own and won't fade.
4) How big is the base on the Oatey 12920 flashing?
Base measures 9 x 12.5 inches. That footprint has to tuck under the course of shingles above the penetration, so lay out your stack location with that dimension in mind before you cut the hole. The whole piece weighs about 0.408 lb, light enough to carry a bundle of them up a ladder.
5) Will an aluminum roof flashing hold up on a vent, or should I use lead or galvanized?
The 12920 uses a rustproof stamped aluminum base, which is the usual choice on asphalt shingle roofs: it won't rust and it bends easily so you can form it to the roof contour and the shingle course. Lead-sleeve flashings are the ones usually chosen where the sleeve gets folded into the pipe; galvanized is used where a heavier gauge base is specified. Aluminum is the wrong pick on hot-mopped or built-up roofs, which this base is not rated for.
