OATEY 30893 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does Oatey blue PVC cement meet California VOC rules for SCAQMD districts?
It does. This is a low VOC solvent cement that meets SCAQMD Rule 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it's legal to specify and use in the California air districts that enforce them. It also meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec for PVC solvent cements that most plan sets and plumbing codes call out, and all Oatey solvent cement and primer products are certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
2) Do I need a primer with Oatey Rain-R-Shine blue cement?
Rain-R-Shine is a one-step blue cement, so on pressure and DWV PVC it solvent welds on its own. Where it matters is code: many jurisdictions require purple primer on PVC pressure piping regardless of the cement, and an inspector looks for the purple witness mark on the joint. Check what your local plumbing code and the job spec require before you skip it. The blue color of the cement itself is not a primer indicator.
3) How fast does Oatey 30893 set before I can pressurize the line?
It's a very fast setting cement, formulated so you can pressurize and move on quickly instead of losing the rest of the shift to cure time. That's the trade off worth knowing before you buy: fast set means less working time to seat and quarter-turn the fitting, so dry fit first and have the joint ready to go before the dauber comes out of the can. On a repair where you're racing a shutoff, that speed is the reason to reach for this one.
4) What temperature can a PVC joint made with Oatey Rain-R-Shine handle in service?
The cement carries a maximum use temperature of 60C. That's a service ceiling on the finished joint, not the application window, and it's the reason PVC and this cement stay off hot water distribution. Hot lines are CPVC territory with a CPVC cement. For cold potable, irrigation, pool and spa, and DWV, 60C is well clear of anything those lines see.
5) Which Oatey part number is the 16 oz blue PVC cement, and is a dauber included?
Oatey 30893 is the 16 oz can of PVC Rain-R-Shine blue cement, and the dauber comes in the lid, so nothing else is needed to apply it. Net weight on the can is 1.15 pounds. That's the part number to put on a PO or a restock list when you're standardizing what the trucks carry.
