1) What pipe sizes does the Oatey 12806 Sideflash cover?
The 12806 Sideflash handles pipe from 3 inches up to 6 inches. The elastomeric collar is molded with tear-out rings, so you strip back to the ring that matches your penetration and the collar seals tight to that diameter. One part covers the whole 3 to 6 inch range, which is why it works well as a stocked item when you don't know the pipe size until you're on the wall.
2) Is the Oatey Sideflash for a roof penetration or a sidewall penetration?
It's for vertical surfaces. The Sideflash is made for sealing piping penetrations where they pass through an outside wall, commercial or residential. For a pipe coming up through a sloped or flat roof deck you want a roof flashing with a base pitched to the slope, not this flat vertical base.
3) How big is the base plate on the Oatey 12806 and will it cover my existing wall opening?
The base measures 12.5 by 12 inches, a hard plastic panel with the elastomeric collar molded in the center. As long as the rough opening around your pipe stays inside that footprint with enough flat wall left to fasten and seal the perimeter, the panel will cover it. An oversized or chopped-up opening needs patching first.
4) Can I use the Oatey Sideflash on a hot flue or exhaust pipe?
Only up to 180 degrees F. The Sideflash is rated to 180F, which covers condensing furnace and water heater PVC venting, dryer exhaust, and plumbing penetrations. Anything running hotter, like a metal B-vent or a single-wall flue, needs a metal thimble instead.
5) Is the Oatey Sideflash better than foaming or caulking around a pipe penetration?
That's the trade-off it's built for. Caulk and spray foam are cheap at install but shrink, crack and need redoing. The Sideflash is a one-piece plastic panel with a flexible collar, so it seals against air infiltration, keeps moisture out to limit mold, and blocks bugs and vermin at the opening. 6) Will the Oatey 12806 flashing fade or rust where it's exposed on an exterior wall?
No. It's plastic and elastomeric, not metal, so it won't fade, crack or rust in exterior exposure. The panel comes in orange, which Oatey uses so inspectors and crews can spot the penetration easily during framing and rough-in. If the wall finish is going over it, that color is hidden once siding or cladding is on.
