OATEY 11830 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Oatey 11830 the right part for a solar array standoff, or is it a plumbing vent flashing?
It is built for solar. The collar range of 1/2 to 1 inch is sized to solar panel mounting system posts rather than to plumbing vent stacks, which are typically 1-1/2 to 4 inches. If you are flashing a DWV vent pipe, you need a larger No-Calk roof flashing, not the 11830.
2) What roof pitch can the Oatey 11830 solar flashing be installed on?
The galvanized metal base is formed for pitches from 0 to 40 degrees, which is anything up to a 10/12 roof. Steeper than 10/12 and the base will not lay correctly against the deck.
3) Can I use the Oatey 11830 No-Calk flashing on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The 11830 is not approved for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. It is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and approved for Type B installations, but the torch and hot asphalt work on a built-up assembly is outside that rating. Use a flashing specified for built-up roofing instead.
4) How big is the base on the Oatey 11830 solar flashing, and will it tuck under standard shingle courses?
The base measures 9 x 12.5 inches, giving enough deck coverage to slide the upper portion under the shingle course above the penetration and lap the lower portion over the course below, which is the normal shingle installation. It is 28 gauge galvanized steel.
5) Can I paint the Oatey 11830 flashing to match the roof?
Do not paint the collar or the plastic base, and keep petroleum based products off them as well. Both will degrade the seal. The collar is made not to fade, so it holds its appearance without coating. The steel base ships unfinished galvanized.
6) Do I need sealant or extra hardware to install the Oatey 11830 solar flashing?
No caulk is required at the collar, which is the point of the No-Calk design: the collar grips and seals the post as it slides over it. You still fasten the steel base to the deck and weave it into the shingle courses with your own roofing fasteners, which are not part of the flashing.
7) How much does one Oatey 11830 flashing weigh for a bulk array order?
Each unit weighs 0.7 and takes 0.194 in volume, so a pallet count for a multi-penetration array is easy to work out. Order one per standoff penetration.
