1) What roof pitch can the Oatey 12946 No-Calk flashing be used on?
The stamped aluminum base handles pitches from 0 to 40 degrees, which covers anything up to a 10/12 roof. Past 10/12 you need a steeper-pitch base. The base metal is soft enough to shape to the deck or to shingle contours as you set it.
2) Will the Oatey 12946 work on a flat built-up or hot-mopped roof?
No. The 12946 is specifically not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs, even though the base is rated down to 0 degrees pitch. For a tar or BUR assembly you want a flashing intended for hot asphalt application.
3) What size vent pipe does the Oatey 12946 roof flashing fit?
It is sized for 3 inch pipe. The self-sealing collar slides down over the pipe and seals against it, so no caulk is needed at the penetration.
4) Can I use this flashing on a gas appliance or furnace vent?
Yes, it is approved for Type B installations and rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat, so it can be used over a Type B vent within that temperature limit.
5) Can I paint the flashing collar to match the roof?
Don't. Petroleum based products and paint must not be applied to the collar, and the collar is made not to fade, so it does not need coating. The aluminum base itself ships unfinished.
6) Do I need sealant or a separate collar to install the Oatey 12946?
No separate caulk or collar is required at the pipe. The self-sealing collar does that work when it slides over the 3 inch pipe. You still fasten and weather-lap the 11 x 14.5 inch base into the shingle courses as normal.
7) Is an aluminum roof flashing base going to rust out on me?
No. The base is rustproof stamped aluminum, which is also why it bends readily for shaping to the roof surface. Keep in mind aluminum should not be in direct contact with incompatible roofing metals on a job where galvanic action is a concern.
